Stylemate with drive

Cycling is probably the most popular actively pursued sport in the world. If you

don’t take the term “sport” too literally and also include those who only occasio-

nally hop on their bike. Golf on the other hand is still reserved for a minority, even

though 60 million people worldwide belong to this elite club. Golf cannot be taken

for granted, for many people golf is still a mystery and some people have precon-

ceptions about it. Others are passionate about golf, which doesn’t prevent them

from looking pretty unhappy after a triple bogey. But the hope of a triple eagle or

even a hole in one is still alive no matter. And because almost wherever there is a

fine hotel, a great golf course is not far away. Which we can also prove with this

issue of Stylemate. Happy reading! We recommend that you find a nice spot for

this, for example in your hotel’s wellness area. Or your hotel room’s sun terrace.

Heimo Valentintschitsch is a cameraman and

journalist. He caught the golfing bug when he was 13

during a stay in England. The fact that the incubation

period lasted 20 years and the golfing bug only broke

out in 1996 is another story. After 15 years of very

intensive, slightly sporty, “almost good golf” he has

been a passionate “recreational golfer” and friend of

the more indulgent sides of this sport for five years.

HEIMO VALENTINTSCHITSCH

THE FASCINATION OF GOLFNO THANKS I STILL HAVE A SEX LIFE! YOU CAN’T CALL IT A SPORT! I CAN WALK AROUND LIKE THAT TOO! THESE ARE

JUST THREE OF THE USUAL RESPONSES WHEN YOU ASK SOMEONE: DO YOU PLAY GOLF TOO? BUT SEEING AS GOLF

ISN’T JUST CONSTITUTE A GAME BUT FAR MORE A LIFESTYLE, THIS QUESTION WOULD ALSO BE JUSTIFIED: DO YOU

LIVE FOR GOLF MOMENTS?

/ GOLF AND WELLNESS /

Golfclub Fontana: Even on the approach it becomes clear to the visitor that you’re entering a totally different world by Central European standards.

As the inquirer you very often slip into the

role of the defender or are in fact uncertain

about whether you can even admit to your

opponent that you’ve also fallen victim to

this wonderful sport yourself! Although the

sporty side of golf is undisputed, it does

not play a leading role for the majority of

the 60 million golfers worldwide.

Then what?, those of you who haven’t fal-

len victim to this bug yet are asking.

Well there are already scientific papers,

doctoral theses and books upon books

that try to answer that question. Whether

you, dear Readers, would find the right

answer in all these publications remains

to be seen.

We’re going to approach things a bit dif-

ferently today. Using the example of two

Austrian golf courses. No, they’re not

just golf courses but more like worlds

of adventure which could not be any

more different with regards to their

courses. And yet they have a hell of a

lot in common as far as what makes

golf fascinating is concerned.

We start just outside the capital of

Vienna, more precisely in a village

called Oberwaltersdorf. Okay, you

might say, there was something about that

once, I’ve heard of that. Yes, this village be-

came famous because the Austrian-Cana-

dian industrial magnate Frank Stronach

chose precisely this place to set up the

European head office of “Magna”. How and

what this successful Austrian abroad set

up on these green fields is really second to

none. Magna’s European head office! A re-

sidential resort in a class of its own! Tennis

courts and halls! A swimming lake with a

white sandy beach! A racecourse with the

most amazing stables far and wide! And of

course:

More than a touch of the big wide

world: the “Fontana” golf club

Even on the approach it becomes clear to

the visitor that you’re entering a totally diffe-

rent world by Central European standards.

You cross a stone bridge with a waterfall,

flowers and shrubs, everything looks like it

comes straight out of a storybook. On the

right are the first tennis courts between

park-like green areas, on the left gardeners

are working on new flower arrangements:

Pictures that you are more familiar with out

of various Hollywood films. Things get really

impressive later on when you approach the

clubhouse. You can already see everything

that awaits you here on the sign at the first

roundabout. One drive leads to Magna’s Eu-

ropean head office, another one to the villas

built in Hollywood style and the golf course’s

parking spaces. From now on, golfers’ pul-

ses race noticeably faster as they approach

probably the most magnificent clubhouse at

a European golf course, situated at an azu-

re blue swimming lake with a white sandy

beach. You pass the incredible driving ran-

ge and are welcomed by a “Caddymaster” a

little bit later on and led to the secretary’s of-

fice to register. Light marble, the impeccably

stylish atmosphere and the first glimpse of

the course await you. After “check-in” you

should definitely head for the driving range

(even if you’re a “driving grouch”), as even

this impresses at a level that is totally unique.

After the initial surprised and impressed

deep breath the path leads you to the tee

for the first hole, past a putting green on one

side and the crystal clear lake on the other.

All of this at the standard of top American

courses, but rare and almost impossible to

find in our part of the world. What is now on

offer from the first tee onwards really gets

any golfer’s pulse racing.

Fairways trimmed to millimetre accuracy,

bunker landscapes that are more reminis-

cent of sandy beaches in the Caribbean

or the famous “old style pot bunker” at St.

Andrews (Scotland). All the 18 fairways have

R HEIMO VALENTINTSCHITSCH

All the 18 fairways have one thing in common: probably

the hugest, most difficult and best groomed greens far and

wide.

THE FASCINATION OF GOLF

one thing in common though: probably the

hugest, most difficult and best groomed

greens far and wide. Highlighting one sing-

le hole explicitly as the “best, most difficult,

most sensational” would not do justice to all

the other 17 fairways. That’s why this choice

is left to each player themselves.

Don’t worry though, golf doesn’t need to

be practised in the perfect “American” form

shown to us in Oberwaltersdorf. It can be

played quite differently too!

Close to nature golf in “Adamstal”

Just a 45-minute drive away from the Fon-

tana golf club having just driven through the

Triestingtal valley we turn left into Hainfeld.

The mountain faces and forests next to

the road get bigger and steeper, there are

a few cows to be seen here and there and

we ask ourselves for the first time: is there

really supposed to be a golf course in this

stunning but pretty rustic region? The place

that not only makes golfers happy but is also

one of Austria’s most fascinating regions for

nature lovers, wild mushroom collectors and

hikers. Yes! Right here in the municipality of

Ramsau in Adamstal valley!

Once we’ve arrived at the car park, we natu-

rally ask ourselves first whether we’re actu-

ally in the right place. As with the best will in

the world, there is not one let alone two golf

courses to be detected anywhere. Yes, not

even a glimpse of a clubhouse or secretary’s

office, so we have to put our faith in the sign-

posts. And then all of a sudden there it is! A

bridge leads to the magically beautiful club-

house, which is a picture postcard timbered

house. Surrounded by old trees, on white

gravel paths, that’s how the golf adventure

starts at Adamstal GC.

Opposite the clubhouse is the secretary’s

office with the very well stocked Pro Shop.

What you immediately notice as soon as you

enter is the hospitality that you’re welcomed

with. It doesn’t matter whether you’re ente-

ring this golf sporting gem for the first time

or for the umpteenth time.

Welcome, “Grias di”, “Buongiorno” or what-

ever, that’s how you’re welcomed by the

Wittmann family. Franz Wittmann, the mas-

termind, and his wife Rolanda have created

something in their home that you will have to

look long and hard to find again.

With the same perfection that Franz Witt-

mann dominated the national and interna-

tional rally scene from 1972-2003 (79 wins,

32 of them in the European Rally Champi-

onships and one in the World Rally Champi-

onships) he set himself the goal of building

his own golf course. The fact that he had

actually chosen a totally unsuitable place for

a golf course is, considered today, like win-

ning the jackpot in the lottery for any golfer.

What golfers instantly notice here are the

countless, shiny top-maintained e-cars

standing on the forecourt. Please make

use of this offer, especially if you’re

heading onto this course for the

first time. It’s worth it! Remember

what the surrounding area looked

like on the journey here. The course

is built in the mountains. Don’t wor-

ry though, the fairways are therefore

not only suitable for mountaineers,

in fact quite the opposite. Franz Witt-

mann had the vision of integrating a

golf course so close to nature that you

don’t even notice that you’re actually

on an artificially made sports ground.

He has managed to do this with a per-

fection that impresses any guest.

As far as the most beautiful and spec-

tacular fairway is concerned, it’s just like

at the Fontana golf club. It’s not actually

possible to pick out one single fairway

out and award it the title “the Signature

Hole”. As from the very first tee the visual

overstimulation is so huge that you “al-

most” forget the golfing and that’s okay.

Golfing and indulgence

Precisely these kinds of impressions con-

tribute to the fascination of golf and make

this sport so unique.

Moreover there is the uniqueness of the

game of golf. You can and should play it

in company but you should never forget

one thing: golf is probably the loneliest

sport that you can devote yourself to. Just

you, one ball, several clubs and the fairway.

Every thing that happens now, is only and exclu-

sively down to your own fault or skill. No wrong

pass to a team mate, no unjust decision by the

referee or poorly waxed ski have anything to

do with the outcome. Although it is of course in

man’s nature to always look for and find some

kind of apology or excuse for a poor swing.

It is this solitude in particular that often makes it

a meditative experience and what it is - “GOLF”!

One of the “wisest” quotes from the golfing

world is: “Golf and sex are the only things that

you can really enjoy without being really good

at them.”

I don’t care, you might now be saying, what’s

important to me is just that I can eat and drink

well when I’m out and about. And here in

particular we come full circle as to why golf

and golf courses can also offer “non-golfers”

a great deal. As it is especially catering and

hotel establishments that belong to good golf

courses, which can and should be used by all

visitors and guests in the region around the

golf courses. The best thing is to simply give

it a go. Make sure you’re up for a golfing ex-

perience next time and give it a try with a trial

session! It is definitely worth it! STOP

Tee up – is the summer’s motto. And tee

shirts are plain, striped or in classic dark

shades. Regardless of whether it’s at Bog-

are essential for performance in any weather

body temperature constant during the game.

APPLY TO SPEED GOLFERS AT ALL – THEY SOMETIMES EVEN RUN OVER THE GREEN IN TRAINERS. RUNNING

REMAINS THE THEME FOR ACTIVE WEAR THOUGH – WHETHER IT’S FUTURISTIC, LUXURIOUS, TECHNO OR

DAZZLING AWESOMENESS …

1,500 square kilometres of untouched na-

ture nestled between the Eastern Alps’

most stunning peaks offer silent moments

of happiness for romantics as well as full-

speed workouts for alpine freaks: The

breathtaking authentic nature of the Hohe

Tauern national park, the Defferegen and

Hochpustertal valleys and the Lienz Dolo-

mites provide the best conditions for wild,

fast, tenacious sports enthusiasts and for

those who take things more leisurely and

prefer the romance.

Tours, trails & slopes that

get under your skin

Even though ski tourers are individualists,

non-locals in particular should entrust local

mountain guides at the start – high alpine is

after all high in the Alps. And: the most stun-

ning tours can certainly be enjoyed best in

expert company. Highly skilled tourers will

probably be really into the highest level ski

tour challenges: anyone who conquers the

Eastern Alps’ most stunning peaks in six

days on the “Ski Route Hoch Tirol” and

has climbed the Großglockner at the end,

knows what sunshine skiing in East Tyrol is:

dazzling awesomenes of the sunniest kind

in fact!

Fans of alpine skiing will find 150 kilometres

of slopes in total in East Tyrol, which offer

everything from nursery slopes to the al pine

World Cup run, which can be tackled on

skis or boards. What’s particularly pleasant:

there are no queues at the lift and crowds

on packed slopes in East Tyrol, as there is

hardly any day trip tourism here but lots of

modern lifts. Plenty of space on sunny slo-

pes, safe lifts and sensational runs therefore

also drive fans of the alpine sport ... (correct!)

– mad with their sunny, dazzling awesome-

ness! However, those who throw themsel-

ves into the Nordic style can get ample ac-

tion on 400 kilometres of trails too: thanks to

the high location there is still plenty of snow

and of course sun, sun, sun, in the spring

too: Awesome!

Wild animals, mother

/ SALZKAMMERGUT /

Looked at matter-of-factly, the Salzkam-

mergut is situated where Styria, Upper

Austria and Salzburg meet. This dry fact

scarcely captures its essence in real life

though as it actually means that you are in

a very special landscape that equally tou-

ches the mind, body and soul and in fact

very, very deeply. And: this is not just the

case nowadays but has applied since the

very beginning of mankind, but a bit more

about that later.

Natural and cultural wealth ...

Gentle meadows and expansive mountain

forests swing high up around the majestic

Dachstein, vast alpine pastures and crys-

tal clear mountain lakes nestle in between.

The flora in the alpine region is second to

none and the fauna is similarly diverse.

The result: lakes and mountain ridges

stretching over the extremely magical fog,

AS IS WELL KNOWN THE ALPS BOAST SEVERAL SUPERLATIVES. MAJESTIC AND MAGIC CAN ONLY PROBABLY BE

JUSTIFIABLY USED FOR JUST ONE ALPINE AREA THOUGH, THE SALZKAMMERGUT. ON THE ONE HAND IT IS QUITE

SIMPLE. ON THE OTHER HAND IT IS VERY SPECIAL. AND THEREFORE IT IS QUITE SIMPLY VERY SPECIAL: EQUALLY

AS MAJESTIC AND MAGIC.

glistening glaciers, lush meadows of flow-

ers under the bleak majesty of the high-

alpine Dachstein – this extreme diversity

in a small space displays its copious ama-

zing charms to the full. Spectacular view-

ing platforms on the Krippenstein, such as

the legendary “5fingers”, “Welterbespira-

le” or the “Dachstein Hai”, are easy to hike

to but guarantee an adrenaline rush at

the very highest level nevertheless. How-

ever, there’s not just quite a bit on offer

up the mountain but also in the mountain:

the Giant Ice Cave, Mammoth Cave and

underground water cascades in the Kop-

penbrüller Cave are as just spectacular as

they are breathtaking.

Tradition and customs are just as much a

part of the Dachstein Salzkammergut ho-

liday region as the mountains, lakes and

caves. As the inhabitants in this region

preserve a cultural world heritage: with

SIMPLY MAGIC

its actual living traditions, with historical

craftsmanship and with music that is not

“folksy” at all but totally authentic.

... in abundance

People had already grasped the special

magic of this region roughly 3,000 years

ago. They settled in the region around

Hallstatt and gave their name to an entire

period: following historical finds in a very

large cemetery above Hallstatt one period

during the Early Ice Age (800 to 450 BC)

was given the name the Hallstatt Culture.

Valuable archaeological finds from this pe-

riod can be viewed at the Hallstatt World

Heritage Museum throughout the year.

Since the Bronze Age people have been

using another treasure though, literally the

salt of the earth. Nowadays this allows for

exciting excursions, for example to the

“Man in Salt” (a 2,000-year old mummy) in

Hallstatt’s salt worlds. Salt, “white gold”,

has given this isolated area great econo-

mic importance as well as considerable

cultural power over the centuries. This can

be seen for example by the houses’ at-

tractive architecture and their typical woo-

den decorations. It is therefore also no

surprise that Hallstatt, together with the

Dachstein and the interior Salzkammergut

region around the idyllic towns of Bad Goi-

sern, Gosau, Hallstatt and Obertraun, was

declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site

in 1997. STOP

Gosausee: Nearly too beautiful to be true – in the Salzkammergut to be found at virtually every turn: Nature. Majestic and magic.

/ SALZKAMMERGUT / HALLSTATT /

HALLSTATT HIDEAWAY: THE NAME SAYS IT ALL

HALLSTATT HIDEAWAY IS ACTUALLY ALMOST AN IMPOSSIBLE THING: THE HEART IS FORMED BY TWO HOUSES, ONE

FROM THE RENAISSANCE, THE OTHER BAROQUE AND CONNECTED TOGETHER AS A DOMICILE FOR MARIA THERESIA’S

FORESTER ADAM PRAUNSPERGLER IN 1740 – AND THEREFORE A LISTED BUILDING OF COURSE. THE BACK OF THE

PROPERTY IS ANCHORED DEEP IN THE ROCK OF HALLSTATT’S SALZBERG MOUNTAIN, THE FRONT IS OPEN TOWARDS

THE LAKE, ALMOST FLOATING ABOVE HALLSTATT THE PROPERTY HAS BEEN AS ARTISTICALLY AS LOVINGLY RESTO-

RED, EXTENDED AND BEAMED INTO CONTEMPORARY LIFE WITH GREAT EXPERTISE.

The result: 5 private suites, each of them

unique – some with an open fire, four-poster

bed with lake view, large patio, library with

rocking chairs or antique stucco ceiling ...

However, it’s not just the architecture that

takes a massive leap through the centuries

although the synthesis of old and new is bril-

liantly authentic and of the highest standard.

There is a leap on a conceptual level too. As:

With Hallstatt Hideaway a retreat has been

created where people who use their poten-

tial practically round the clock and therefore

exhaust it totally can relax as intensively, in-

dividually and instantly as they live their lifes.

High potentials bring and need high impact.

When chilling out and recharging their bat-

teries too.

“The Hallstatt Hideaway concept hotel is

aimed at ensuring instant deep relaxation”,

explains the economist Silke Seemann, who

discovered the property in 1982 and desi-

gned and developed its structure over the

years. “When I saw the stairs made out of

turned yew wood – a tree can only grow in

that way if it’s rooted in a very special loca-

tion – I knew: this is it! That’s why we also

used the 500-year old attic planks and had

four-poster beds built out of them.” These

gems were complemented with timeless

design and an interior that is geared towards

the individual needs of the residents. All the

furniture was designed and made especially

for the specific room. This harmony is trans-

ferred to the guests who become residents

in a home away from home within a few

breaths. “A third place, as futurology calls it”,

adds Silke Seemann, Senior Consultant at

the Zukunftsinstitut in Vienna. “This means

finding everything there that is part of con-

ducting your own individual life in full. For ex-

ample, the option of eating healthily and for

Seemann: “We are sharing the beauty of this gem in the Alps with our guests and therefore ensuring that future generations can also enjoy the magic of this place’s extraordinary architecture and location.”

many people this also means being able to

cook for yourself to a high standard. Or rela-

xing in a private outdoor jacuzzi.” It’s about

the feeling of not having even unpacked

your suitcases yet but already having arri-

ved. Hallstatt Hideaway makes this possib-

le: three suites are fitted with kitchenettes.

The “Lovers Paradise” with lake view from

the Swiss stone pine sauna, deep heat and

relaxation zone can additionally be booked

for very private moments.

By the way, the Hideaway also has one

of the very old salt boats, called a Fuhr in

Hallstatt. This little gem can be booked for

breakfast on the lake, a picnic or simply

for sightseeing from the lake. Anyone who

doesn’t fancy the little walk to the hotel’s

own private beach can be rowed there. Or

meditate bright and early in the Lahn part

of town in total silence right next to the lake.

The sun can be enjoyed here until late into

the evening – there’s a campfire too on re-

quest. Anyone who would like to enjoy the

magical nature in the Salzkammergut regi-

on, can also get assistance with choosing

their tour and even a guide, on request. Or

maybe you prefer not to encounter anyone

and be totally on your own for once. The

highlight at the same time: any one who fan-

cies some intercultural contact in between,

has just a two-minute walk into Hallstatt’s

centre to mingle with people from all over

the world. STOP

FIND THE PERFECT BALANCE BETWEEN A CITY TRIP AND RELAXING

HOLIDAY – BALANCE ISN’T JUST PART OF THE NAME AT LUCERNE’S

HÔTEL DES BALANCES.

/ HOTEL DES BALANCES / LUCERNE /

A BALANCE BETWEEN ADVENTURE AND RELAXATION

Situated right next to the fish and wine mar-

ket, with a terrace facing the Reuss River,

the Hôtel des Balances in Lucerne offers

romantic views as well as a starting point for

revealing insights into the city’s history. The

56 non-smoking rooms show how historical

rooms can be combined harmoniously with

elegant design: individually furnished rooms

in pure white convey understated luxury

with cosy leather armchairs, large mirrors,

elegant wooden furniture and free-standing

baths. The romantic suite with a view over

the river and the alpine panorama provides

the perfect setting for special occasions.

The Hôtel des Balances looks back on a

long history spanning many years that has www.lifestylehotels.net/en/hotel-des-balances

always been all about indulgence: the hotel

was first mentioned in official documents in

the 12th century as a meeting place for the

“Herren zu Schützen” association. In 1807

the “Wirtshaus der Waage” was opened in

it, followed by its conversion into the Hôtel

des Balances in 1837. Once a rustic tavern,

the hotel’s restaurant today boasts sophis-

ticated 5 to 7-course meals and lives up to

its 14 Gault Millau points with creations by

the chef Andy Fluri. A real treat from the

aperitif to passion fruit sorbet or the Swiss

cheese selection. If the weather is good you

can dine on the terrace that hovers directly

above the Reuss River. It reveals a view over

the Jesuit Church but also over the world-

famous Kapellbrücke (Chapel Bridge),

Europe’s oldest and second longest co-

vered wooden bridge.

Glaciers, chocolate and Picasso

Speaking of wood: at the hotel’s wooden

bar, which looks like a ship’s bow, your spirit

of adventure and urge to explore come alive

over your after dinner drink. However Lucer-

ne is not just any old city: there are plenty

of hidden spots to be discovered here. For

example, a unique inner city glacial garden.

Right next to the Lion Monument in a leafy

park you can not only find Late and Post Ice

Age flowers or the time stone path up to the

viewing tower but also impressive glacial

potholes, fossilised shells and palm leaves.

And also the Glacier Museum and most the

wonderful labyrinth of mirrors on earth – ac-

cording to the people of Lucerne.

The Swiss Museum of Transport also at-

tracts people to the city on Lake Lucer-

ne. Not just with its history of mobility and

transport prepared with relish but also with

the interactive multimedia “Swiss Choco-

late Adventure” world and a film theatre at

the heart of which is Switzerland’s largest

cinema screen. The Bourbaki panorama,

a 112 metre long panoramic painting from

1881 whisks you back into the past again.

Anyone who doesn’t just want to meet Ge-

neral Bourbaki in the Franco-Prussian War

of 1870/71 but the musketeer with pipe and

flowers from 1968 too, can view the Picas-

so painting of this name in the Rosengart

collection together with 31 other originals by

Picasso, who was friends with the Rosen-

gart couple. Regardless of whether it’s the

hotel’s own feel-good ambience or tips for

activities away from the hotel: the team at

the Hôtel des Balances takes good care of

all its guests’ needs. STOP

The Eder is in the Premier League when it

comes to active relaxation. The hotel is lo-

cated in the centre of Maria Alm, at the base

of the Hochkönig. The motto of the hotel

with 74 double rooms and suites, indoor

and outdoor pool and spacious wellness

and activity complex is consequently “eder

right in the middle”. For anyone who wants

to be slightly less “right in the middle” the-

re is the idyllic country house in the garden

and apartments next to the (bio) pool.

Energy for bikes & bikers

One great focus at the Eder is mountain

biking. The nearest trails can be found be-

hind the hotel on the local mountain. The

Hochkönig region is also considered to be

a paradise for e-bikers. People can not only

recharge their batteries at the numerous

mountain inns but there are also charging

points for tired e-bikes everywhere.

You can see how much bikers are welco-

med here among other things by the fact

that the cable cars are also happy to let you

take your bikes with you. With the Hochkö-

nigcard transport is included on the cable

cars and the hiking buses too. This also ap-

plies by the way to the free admission to ten-

nis courts, outdoor pools and a world first,

the forest slide park.

The wonderful Saalfelden basin with a

circular tour around Lake Zell is absolu-

tely perfect for lovers of tours. Downhil-

lers who need that adrenaline kick will get

their money’s worth at the nearby Leogang

downhill park where even the best bikers in

the world throw themselves downhill.

Featuring the ROSE

The great expertise in mountain biking at

the Eder is also shown by the fact that the

hotel is one of six test centres in Europe for

the ROSE traditional bike brand. You can

therefore test out the best and latest luxury

bikes to your heart’s content here.

Besides the test bikes there is also a team

of experienced guides, who support bikers

of any level of ability. For this reason, as a

member of the international Mountain Bike

Holidays Group, the Eder is one of the best

bike hotels in the Salzburg region of Pinz-

gau.

Speaking of the Premier League: the top

German football club Fortuna Düsseldorf

(Second German league) is holding its trai-

ning camp at the Eder for the fifth time from

6 to 15 July. The traditional Hamburg club

FC St. Pauli from the same league will be a

guest at the Eder for the first time this year

from 11 to 22 July. Professional footballers

also love the stunning mountains and sporty

challenges around the Eder. STOP

Spring at the Bergland Sölden design and

with sunshine skiing on firn slopes or a ski

it was also worth the hotel owner Sigi keeping

such a watchful eye on his sheep for them. As

then the tender lamb ends up on their plate ac-

companied by delicious polenta and the first

edible wild herbs of the year. Or a fine kid with

barberry and honey glaze made from genuine

SRI LANKA’S SWEETNESS

Sri Lanka is known by many names: Tapro-

bane, Serendib or Ceylon. And it is famous

for its spices. Sri Lanka’s cuisine, just like all

South Asian cooking, stands for spiciness,

for curry, which can push the European

palate to its pain thresholds. And yet the

spice that stands for Sri Lanka more than

any other is primarily used to spice sweet

dishes in European cuisine: cinnamon.

The authentic, genuine and right cinnamon

is also the spice that is undisputedly at

home in Sri Lanka, as its botanical name

already reveals: Cinnamomum zealanicum,

Ceylonese cinnamon. The delicacy was

harvested from the bark of the first wild

cinnamon trees that grew here in Sri Lan-

ka. Today cinnamon trees are cultivated on

plantations. And even though the island

state has lost its monopoly on cinnamon,

it is still the number one exporter of cin-

namon in the world. 80 percent and more

of the world production comes from here,

roughly 16,000 tonnes per year. According

to the “Spice Council of Sri Lanka” it could

be even more if there were more cinnamon

bark peelers.

However, Sri Lanka has even more to offer

as far as spices are concerned. Be sides

saffron and vanilla, (green) cardamom

is one of the most precious spices in the

world, Sri Lanka also exports just about

60 tonnes of this per year. Vanilla can also

be found on this tropical island. The orchid

pods which originally stem from Mexico

thrive wonderfully here.

Nutmeg and mace, spiced cloves, ginger

and of course pepper and lemongrass

have also become native Sri Lankans,

even if they don’t originate from here. As

Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch and British

sailors didn’t just snatch spices from Sri

Lanka but they also brought new varieties

to the country.

Which brings us back to curry. With meat,

fish or just vegetables, the Asian ragout

that comes from India is also a national

dish in Sri Lanka. And one or two of the

spices that tend to be found in bakeries,

cakes and other desserts in Europe, also

belong in a curry here. The burning spici-

ness is provided by the capsaicin of chilli

peppers, immigrants from Central and

South America.

Anyone who wants to savour a curry in-

the hotel belongs to the empire of the

The wonderful thing is: the hotel not only

mountains in South Tyrol. While the valley is

already full of flowers in the spring, the snow

still glistens high up.

High up, that sounds like extreme sports. It

doesn’t have to be though. Gentle “Waalwe-

ge” irrigation channels that were once de-

signed to water the region’s fields, connect

the area up perfectly for leisurely hikers.

Anyone who prefers to travel on two wheels

can expect almost 5,000 kilometres of cycle

paths and trails in South Tyrol. The terrain on

the sunny side of the Alps provides the right

challenge for any kind of cycling: from a lei-

surely tour around Lake Reschen to the alpi-

ne tour up to the Stelvio Pass with its more

than 52 hairpin bends. By the way, they are

also an experience by car ...

virtually endless apple orchards in the val-

even follow in the footsteps of the Romans

in South Tyrol, by car and by bike: along the

Via Claudia Augusta, which stretches from

the Danube as far as the Adria.

And what would South Tyrol be without

castles, fortresses and ruins? Runkelstein

gau, the legendary Leuchtenstein castle ru-

ins above Lake Kaltern ... Many of them have

grown together with the mountain, provided

Anyone interested in Medieval frescoes will

find plenty of them in little churches. For

example, in the Hocheppan Castle chapel:

the oldest illustration of a Tyrolean dumpling

can be seen there on a fresco from the 13th

As soon as you enter this hotel you can sense

that it is something really special. According

to the village chronicle, the four-star romantic

hotel with a great deal of charm and modern

architecture was once a monastery tavern

for the Marienberg Abbey. It has been ow-

ned by the Theiner family since 1870, now

in the fifth generation. The tangible history

combined with contemporary comfort and

lots of wood convey a feeling of security and

warmth. The listed “Ansitz zum Löwen” right

next door on Burgeis’ idyllic village square

is a very special refuge. Built in the 13th

century. The former grand residence and

guesthouse offers people who are looking

for something special nine unique suites

and historical lounges, furnished with all the

comforts of modern four-star accommo-

With the “Kaltenbach” in the heart of the

chalets for up to 13 people in Swiss stone

pine and oak provide the perfect base for a

two floors flooded with daylight. The hotel

also really spoils you with the Kristallcha-

VILA JOYA: A THOUSAND AND ONE TREATS

IN THE STYLE OF A LITTLE MOORISH PALACE, THE VILA JOYA LIES NESTLED IN A LUSH GARDEN OF PALM TREES,

CYPRESSES AND AGAVE TREES, THAT CONTRASTS STUNNINGLY WITH THE PROTRUDING BRIGHT CLIFFS.

Here on the natural coastline of Praia da

Galé, it goes without saying that the sun

welcomes you every day on holiday with its

unforgettable spectacle. As a result, the Vila

Joya, which was named after its hostess by

the way, also lives up to its name’s second

meaning: the house of joy!

Guests at the Vila Joya can even admire

the natural spectacles totally relaxed from

their beds. Each room, except for the small

driver’s room, has a wonderful view over

the sparkling Atlantic and of the sun. The

sounds of the sea and seagulls crying are

the first things to wake you up in the morning

as Vila Joya is situated quite far away from

the next town of Albufeira. The property has

direct access to the beach, a small private

sandy bay is revealed after just a few minu-

tes’ walk. All the rooms and suites on the

ground floor also have direct access to the

garden.

Anyone who would prefer to walk for kilo-

metres along the beach from Galé can hike

along the dunes on an idyllic path or play

with the waves lapping the shore. It doesn’t

/ ALBUFEIRA / PORTUGAL /

matter whether this is before or after break-

fast, which can be served on the terrace al-

most all year round as a result of the mild

climate.

While guests escape the hustle and bus-

tle of their everyday life, all their wishes are

fulfilled quickly and discreetly at Vila Joya.

“Personalised service” is all part and parcel

of the hotel’s style.

A whole range of activities

Numerous regular guests value this informal

atmosphere at Vila Joya. They can totally

chill out here, freshen up in the hotel’s own

spa, go and play golf, surf or horse ride. In

the low season, when the beaches are not

as overcrowded yet, horse riding is even al-

lowed right next to the water.

Surfers show off their skills in the water

along with more and more paddle surfers

over the last few years. The picturesque

coastal landscape and hinterland with its

gentle hills and countless almond, fig and

orange trees are also worth taking a look at

from the air – a parachute jump provides a

whole new perspective! However, this area

is unimaginable without its golf courses. 36

courses can be reached in less than 45 mi-

nutes from the Vila Joya alone. You won’t

be able to resist the championship courses

within walking distance and of course the

personal support at the Vila Joya Golf Aca-

demy by golf pro José Ferreira.

However, sport can also be enjoyed without

even leaving the hotel: in Vila Joya’s gym

with views into the distance over the hori-

zon. Two outdoor pools, one of them hea-

ted, invite you to take a swim, and the hea-

ted Jacuzzi is a warming opposite pole to

the sometimes quite fresh Atlantic breeze.

Inside the spa, every single cell in your body

is stimulated, sometimes even by healing

sounds during a sound healing session.

After sport or the spa you can rest brilli-

antly in the garden and in the rooms de-

signed with accents typical of the coun-

try. Subtle natural colours, Portuguese

cork flooring but also colourful hand

painted Portuguese “Azulejos” tiles give

the fourteen rooms and eight suites their

unique flair. Anyone staying in the Roy-

al Suite 1001 can almost relive the fairy

story of One Thousand and One Nights.

World-class dining!

In the evening guests at the Vila Joya gather

for a real highlight: they dine in regal style at

one of the “World’s 50 Best Restaurants by

S. Pellegrion” and are indulged with culinary

delights by the chef Dieter Koschina with his

two Michelin stars. Whether it’s guinea fowl

with black truffles and artichokes or Bacal-

hau (Portuguese salted cod) with beetroot

and yoghurt, you can find the perfect ac-

companying wine in the hotel’s own cellar

with its 12,000 bottles. Arnaud Vallet, Som-

melier of the Year 2012, will be happy to ad-

LIFESTYLE HOTELS can only be found

in beautiful spots – in fact in very beautiful

spots on Mallorca, as the General Manager

Luis Seminario proudly tells us. Quite rightly,

as “his hotels”, owned by a long-established

Majorcan family, are the “Convent de la

Missió” boutique hotel in Palma’s old town,

the “Can Simoneta” boutique hotel in Can-

yamel and the “Font Santa Hotel Thermal

Spa & Wellness” boutique hotel in Campos.

“Our hotels are very special, exclusive and

unique. And our customers always come

first. We want to offer service, service and

more service – 24 hours a day 7 days a

week”, explains Seminario.

Modern hotel in a cloister

The “Convent de la Missió” hotel originates

from the 17th century and was formerly a

cloister. Whether you're in the salon, bar,

restaurant, on the sun terrace or in the sau-

na, it is pleasantly peaceful everywhere.

The owner’s love of art can be sensed eve-

rywhere. “The Art Bar”, once the cloister’s

dining hall, is an exhibition room and bar

with works by contemporary artists. In the

“Simply Fosh” restaurant the chef Marc

Fosh conjures up light, Mediterranean and

creative dishes.

Font Santa Hotel –

Thermal Spa & Wellness

This adults-only hotel in the south of Mal-

lorca near Campos has the only natural

thermal spring in the Balearics. This ther-

mal water that comes from the depths is

enriched with minerals and given properties

that are impossible to produce artificially as

it rises into the groundwater. The health spa

is a listed building near the Es Trenc beach

and Campos salt marshes. The historical

facades of the spa, hospital and previous

accommodation have all been preserved

and offer total luxury. Most of the 33 modern

and comfortably furnished rooms have their

own terrace with wonderful view over the Es

Trenc nature conservation area and the Es

Salobrar salt marshes in Campos. What is

particularly attractive of course is that this

underground spring supplies the swimming

pool, Jacuzzis and Vichy showers with wa-

ter rich in minerals.

Only the freshest products from the market

are used in the Font Santa Hotel’s outstan-

ding kitchen. Bikes can be loaned from the

hotel free of charge on request.

A Finca "above" the sea

The 5-star Can Simoneta hotel is situated in

the north east of the island on a high plateau

with breathtaking view over the sea. Vast

gardens surround the finca hotel's three

buildings, including the Beach House right

on Canyamel beach. You can get directly to

the sea using a spiral staircase carved into

the rock. The white rooms with natural sha-

des all have different designs and are very

comfortable. Some of them have a terrace

with a sea view or a view over the surroun-

ding “mountains”. Relax with walks, in the

swimming pools, in the sauna, gym or enjoy

massages and beauty treatments (for a fee).

Besides tranquillity and harmony, Can Si-

moneta also offers its guests lots of sporting

opportunities and golfers can find wonderful

golf courses in the near vicinity. Not only can

you enjoy superb dining in the restaurant but

you have a magical view of the sea from the-

The soft, gentle light generated by WIRO and RAY helps to create the right mood. Do you want a cheery morning at 3000 K,

or a 1800 K candle-like light? Either way, we have it covered in less than a second. The secret? The combination of a trendsetting design and an innovative LED technology

provides an especially warm colour temperature - whether at the city’s hottest bars and restaurants or in your private home.

The LED luminaries of Wever & Ducré set the right light for a cosy atmosphere. Keep shining.
