The 10 Easiest Countries to
Obtain Residency
to
Maybe you want to retire abroad, or move for a
better job, or just get a change of scenery.
Well, there are dozens of countries where you
can quickly get residency, but most of them
require hundreds of thousands (or even millions)
of dollars as a down payment.
Luckily a handful of countries aren’t so strict.
We’ll show you the places it’s easiest (and
cheapest) to obtain residency and what it’ll cost
you.
So you’re dreaming of the expat life?
PANAMA What You Get Qualifications
Permanent Residency Visa; eligible
for citizenship after 5 years living in
Panama.
$5,000 in a Panamanian bank
account, plus $2,000 for each
dependent. Must start a business or
get a job in Panama.
BELIZE What You Get Qualifications
Permanent Residency Visa after 1
year in country; eligible for citizenship
after 5 years living in Belize.
$1,000 application fee. If 45 or older
can qualify by proving $2,000/month
income.
NICARAGUA What You Get Qualifications
Retiree Residency Visa after 1 year in
country; eligible for citizenship after 5
years.
Prove income of at least $600/month,
plus $100 for every family member.
However, you can’t work under this
visa (though there are exceptions).
ECUADOR What You Get Qualifications
Permanent Residency Visa; eligible
for citizenship after 3 years living in
Ecuador.
Show $800/month income, or invest
$25k in a CD from an Ecuadorian
bank, or invest at least $25,000 in real
estate (such as buying a home).
PARAGUAY What You Get Qualifications
Permanent Residency Visa; eligible
for citizenship 3 years after applying.
Open a Paraguayan bank account
with at least $5,000, or purchase
Paraguayan real estate, or get a
job/start a company.
URUGUAY What You Get Qualifications
Rentista Visa; eligible for citizenship
after 3 years if married (5 if single).
Prove income of $1,500/month for a
single applicant.
SEYCHELLES What You Get Qualifications
Permanent Residency Visa; eligible
for citizenship after 5 years.
$10,000 permit fee, plus $5,000 for a
spouse and $1,800 per child. Must
provide ~$1500 bank guarantee.
S. AFRICA What You Get Qualifications
Retiree Permanent Residency Visa;
eligible for citizenship after 4 years
living in South Africa.
Prove monthly income of at least
$3,400/month. There is no age
minimum.
PHILIPPINES What You Get Qualifications
Permanent Residency Visa; eligible
for citizenship after 10 years living in
the Philippines.
Must be over the age of 35; $20,000
deposit in Philippine bank (less if
you’re a retiree).
MALAYSIA What You Get Qualifications
Residency Visa good for 10 years
(with option to renew), allows part-
time employment or a business;
eligible for citizenship after 10 years.
Retirees 50 and older need only show
proof of $2,800/month income.
