SOOTHE Flush, blush, tingle…sting. This could describe your latest
relationship or your skin. Rodan + Fields can’t do anything
about your bad dates, but we can offer you some help with
red, sensitive skin.
WHAT IS SENSITIVE SKIN? This condition affects people of all ages, but is not easily
defined from a medical standpoint. Skin sensitivity varies
from person to person, and can be an occasional or
constant occurrence.
WHAT CAUSES YOUR SKIN TO BE SENSITIVE?
A number of factors can contribute to sensitive skin.
Genetics can play a significant role, as well as an ineffective
immune system. Your personal stress level, skincare habits,
or exposure to extreme weather conditions can all trigger
reactions.
Exfoliating too often, over using beauty products, and re-
ceiving too many facial peels are a few things that can also
weaken the skin’s lipid barrier system. This is known as
‘cosmetic intolerance syndrome’.
A weakened protective barrier can cause yeast and bacteria
to overgrow and can change the skin’s pH, which results in
even more sensitivity.

WHAT IS THE LIPID BARRIER? The outer layer of your skin, the epidermis, is made up of dead and live skin cells. The surface’s dead cells (stratum corneum) contain keratin, a protein that helps keep the skin moist by preventing water evaporation. In addition, these cells can also hydrate the skin by absorbing water.
The stratum corneum contains the lipid barrier, which protects your skin by preventing moisture loss and resisting environmental assault. The usual metaphor describes the stratum corneum (your flattened dead cells) as bricks and the intercellular lipids as the mortar. Together they comprise your skin’s wall of defense. More lipids beneath the stratum corneum further protect skin cells by supplying a fresh source of lipids to the lipid barrier in the stratum corneum. The following reactions happen when the skin is assaulted: 1) Moisture leaks out and the skin becomes scaly, dry, and/or cracked. 2) Dehydrated cells begin to weaken the skin’s immune system, and reduce the resistance to environmental irritants.
3) Incidences of infection, skin disease, rashes, and redness increase, as do other problems
such as bacteria related acne, rosacea-type inflammation, eczema, or atopic dermatitis.
Perpetual dry irritated skin may also result in fine lines or deeper wrinkles.
WHAT IS SOOTHE REGIMEN AND HOW DOES IT WORK? Our SOOTHE Regimen contains restorative, hypo-allergenic formulas to help you live more comfortably and confidently
in your skin. Our products help soothe and calm the redness and discomfort caused by environmental aggressors or
genetically prone stressors. Additionally, each product includes lipid barrier repair to help reduce sensitivity.
The SOOTHE Regimen includes three steps that have been carefully formulated with ingredients and medicines
designed to address the unique needs of sensitive skin. Within days or weeks, depending on the severity of your skin’s
inflammatory condition, your skin will feel comfortable, smooth, and soft with a visible reduction of facial redness. In
addition to the three steps, the As Needed Hydrocortisone Lotion reduces excess redness and irritation on especially
inflamed areas.
1 AM + PM Gentle Cream Wash:
A soap-free wash that cleanses without
disrupting the delicate moisture barrier.
3 AM UVA/UVB SPF 15 Sunscreen:
Zinc oxide is a physical sunscreen that reflects
damaging ultraviolet rays and heat to help
reduce facial flushing. Dimethicone serves as
an additional skin protector.
2 AM + PM Anti-Redness Skin Protectant Cream:
Optical filters reflect light, as powerful
antioxidants and anti-irritants help reduce
redness. An FDA approved skin protectant
agent, dimethicone, helps repair skin’s outer
barrier.
As needed: Hydrocortisone Lotion: Medicated lotion calms and reduces localized inflammation, as green tea and aloe vera reduce redness and dimethicone protects skin’s surface.

WHO SHOULD USE SOOTHE REGIMEN? Anyone with:
• Pink to red patchy areas
• Dry, itchy or sensitive skin
• Frequent flushing or blushing
• Skin that stings following product application
• Other symptoms associated with rosacea, eczema, seborrheic dermatitis, or psoriasis
If your skin is highly sensitive, always do a patch test before introducing any new product to your face. Apply each
product in a separate area on your neck, twice daily for two days. Re-coat the test area with the same product. Always
rinse off the cleanser. Monitor areas for redness, itching, or irritation. If the skin is clear, use the products as
directed. If a test area is reactive, avoid that product.
SHAVING INSTRUCTIONS FOR MEN who suffer from chaffed skin, razor burn, or a ruddy complexion: Step 1: SOOTHE Gentle Cream Wash
Wet skin with lukewarm water. Using fingertips, gently massage evenly over
entire face . Avoid contact with eyes. By leaving the wash on your face, it
doubles as a calming shaving lotion. Shave the bearded area with your
razor blade. Rinse and pat dry. (If you use an electric razor, rinse off the
wash, pat your skin dry and shave as usual.)
Step 2: SOOTHE Anti-Redness Skin Protectant Cream
After using SOOTHE Gentle Cream Wash, apply a dime-sized amount, and
blend evenly over the entire face, avoiding eye area. Do not rinse off.
Step 3: SOOTHE UVA/UVB SPF 15 Sunscreen
After using SOOTHE Gentle Cream Wash and SOOTHE Anti-Redness Skin
Protectant Cream, apply a quarter-sized amount evenly over the entire
face. Reapply every 2-3 hours when exposed to sun.
Optional: Apply a thin coat to of SOOTHE As Needed Hydrocortisone Lotion to localized patches of redness, dryness and
scaling on face or body. Recommended use is twice daily, as needed, until clear. Do not exceed 3-4 times per day.
Consult a doctor if the area has not healed after one week.
TIPS: Try SOOTHE Anti-Redness Skin Protectant Cream on red, chapped areas of hands and fingers.
Be mindful that hot water, heat, alcohol, sunlight, harsh wind, and spicy foods can be triggers of increased redness.
While exercising, keep a cool towel nearby to calm skin or suck on ice chips when warm.
Avoid use of an abrasive fabric like a washcloth, buffing pad or exfoliators.
When flare-ups do occur, reapply SOOTHE Anti-Redness Skin Protectant Cream liberally and often.
Never leave your razor sitting in a moist shower, as it encourages the growth of bacteria, yeast and fungus and change
the blade frequently.
If your hairline is receding and your scalp is red and flakey, treat the top of your head as you would your face. Use
SOOTHE Regimen twice daily and make sure to re-apply the sunscreen every two hours if you are outdoors.

FROM THE DOCTORS’ OFFICE BY DR. KATHY FIELDS, CO-FOUNDER OF RODAN+FIELDS
Our faces reveal our secrets - blushing in the arms of a lover, for example. Sadly, some visual clues
can be misinterpreted. I have patients with rosacea, and their red faces are often mistaken for that
of an alcoholic, someone who is over-heated, or someone who has just consumed hot, spicy foods.
Rosacea has many forms, and typically develops in stages. The first stage is a vigorous flush-blush
reaction, where the face begins to become increasingly red with small blood vessels visible on the
cheeks, nose and chin.
The condition can be very embarrassing. As a result of the great W.C. Fields' rosacea and renowned
alcoholism, others today with red faces suffer from the stigma of alcoholism, even if they do not
drink. Rosacea skin can also be very sensitive. Many ingredients in soaps, moisturizers, and even
sunscreen can flare the condition.
We created SOOTHE Regimen, a simple system to control this complicated condition without the usual
sensitizers, fragrances, harsh surfactants or irritating emulsifiers. Our formulation includes gentle
formulations, dimethicone to protect the skin, and lipids to restore and maintain the natural barrier.
We included a specialized sunscreen-zinc to avoid the heat reaction witnessed with other sunscreens.
This keeps the face cooler and therefore displays less redness. The SOOTHE Regimen should be used
daily to maintain great skin. It is effective for men and women of all ethnicities with sensitive, red
and/or irritated skin. SOOTHE Regimen is also helpful for those with red irritated skin and other symptoms of seborrheic
dermatitis, eczema, and cosmetic intolerance syndrome.
Most people, in fact 70%, report that their skin is sensitive at some point in their lives. A new surge
in sensitive skin has been documented, as a result of women who go overboard with products and
procedures. The skin cannot handle the constant peeling, acid washes and complex ingredient
cocktails. The barrier gets stripped, the skin becomes sensitive, and may burn, sting and finally turn
red and dry.
SOOTHE contains the right ingredients in an easy-to-follow regimen to restore and maintain the skins'
good health. SOOTHE also contains an As Needed Lotion for persistent dry, red patches.
