You see the red flags: the water in the sink takes longer to
drain; the water in the shower is up to your ankles; the odd,
offensive odors are assaulting your nose. A few days later
your suspicions are confirmed: a blocked drain pipe. Here
are ten simple ways to clean out the crud that is clogging
your drain.
The Wire Coat Hanger
• Straighten out a wire coat hanger.
• Make a small hook on one end.
• Insert into drain, careful not to
push the clog further down.
• Start pulling out the blockage.
• Flush with hot water.
Baking Soda and Vinegar
• Combine 1/3 baking soda with
1/3 vinegar and watch the
bubbles begin.
• Pour down the clogged drain.
• Allow to sit for one hour.
• Flush with hot water.
The Wet/Dry Vac
• Access a Wet/Dry Vac
• Set for Wet
• Cover up the drain vent
• Create a tight seal over the drain
(adapt a rubber plunger head)
• Turn on the vac to the highest setting
The Boiling Water Method
• Boil a pot of water.
• Pour part of the water slowly down
the drain.
• Wait a few seconds.
• Pour the second part of water slowly
down the drain.
• Repeat if necessary.
• By far the easiest way to clear your
drain.
Sodium Hydroxide*This can be found at the local hardware store.
Word of caution: this can cause burns. Be careful.
Wear gloves and eye protection.
• Pour 3/4 of a gallon of cold water into bucket.
• Add 3 cups sodium hydroxide.
• Stir well with wooden spoon.
• Observe the reaction: fizzing and heat.
• Pour into drain.
• Wait 20 minutes.
• Flush with boiling water.
Clean the Pipe
• Place a bucket under the pipe beneath
the sink.
• Remove the U-trap using a plumber’s
wrench.
• Empty the contents into the bucket.
• Remove any remaining gunk in the u
shape pipe.
• Remove any remaining gunk in the two
straight pipes.
• Put it all back together again.
There’s a Snake in the Drain
• Rent a small drain snake from the local
tool rental, or call a professional.
• Remove the drain cover.
• Spool the wire snake into the drain
working the head past the clog.
• Gently spool the snake out of the
drain.
• Rinse and repeat as necessary.
Salt and Baking Soda
• Mix 1/2 cup salt with 1/2 cup
baking soda.
• Have a plunger handy.
• Pour mix down clogged drain.
• Leave for 10 to 20 minutes.
• While waiting boil a pot of water.
Dish Detergent
• For the toilet.
• Pour 1/4 cup dish detergent into
• toilet bowl.
• Boil a pot of water.
• Slowly pour boiling water into bowl.
• Start plunging.
• Repeat if necessary.
Tip Two Combined with Gravity
and Pressure
Follow step two.
• Pour mixture down drain.
• Wait 30 - 40 minutes.
• Stop up the drain and fill sink/tub full
with water.
• Once full remove stopper and watch
gravity do its job.
• If necessary, use plunger.
