Mise-en-scene Analysis

‘Mise-en-scene’ is another way of saying ‘everything that appears in the frame’. In this analysis, I will be exploring the costume, hair and makeup, body language, facial expressions, settings and props, lighting and colour and lastly the positioning of people and objects within the frame. I have decided to analyse three images: Girls Aloud, Jessie J, and Olly Murs.

The famous pop, girl band Girls Aloud, are all wearing classy, stylish dresses, which make them look like they are dressed for a special occasion. They are wearing bright colours which make people aware they are a pop girl group. Each member of Girls Aloud is wearing a different coloured dress of different styles and lengths. This is showing their individuality and independence. Moreover, they are also wearing high heels which show their classiness and sophistication and are all wearing bright makeup to match their outfits. This includes bright lipstick, blusher and eye shadow, which is very feminine and girly, attracting the target audience. They all have flowing hair but different hair styles to one another, which is another way they are showing off their femininity, beauty and sophistication. Overall, they are all in sync with one another as a band but still have their own individuality.

They are all looking directly at the camera with a serious facial expression, but with a classy and elegant pose. This links to how the genre pop is serious about their music and artists/bands. As they are looking directly towards the reader, this is creating a connection and bond between the reader and girl band. They have the feminine pose by having their hands on their hip which emphasises their girl power and sophistication. They have used a high key studio lighting as their background to make them look more appealing, attractive and as it is more professional. This is causing all the attention to be on the glamorous girls. Furthermore, the bright lighting immediately makes people think of innocence. It is typical for pop to use bright lighting to produce a positive, and fun mood.

The image is a long shot to show off each member of Girls Aloud gorgeous figure and beauty. Moreover, the target audience are able to recognise the girl bands friendship and costume through body language. The girls are positioned beside each other to represent they are a close and secure group. The positioning shows they look out for each other and protect one another. This is shown by the positioning of the two girls having their arm/hand on another member of the group. This is making the target audience feel inspired and look up to the group as role models.

The image of the famous Jessie J shows she has a purple, long sleeved top of on. This is simple but still links to the

Page 2: Mise en-scene

genre pop as purple is a bright colour. Her costume is simple but represents what young girls would wear on a casual day out. This links to the target audience being able to feel that they can still look pretty by wearing a plain top, just like Jessie J. Jessie is wearing a bright pink lipstick and bright pink nails which stands out to the reader. This is also another way that represents Jessie J is a famous pop singer. Furthermore, this also shows her femininity and girly look, just like the target audience. Her hair is simply straightened in a classy bob, which makes her innocence stand out. This is also attracting the audience as they will feel they do not have to spend hours making their hair look perfect as Jessie J hasn't done a fancy do and still looks beautiful.

Jessie J is blowing a kiss towards the reader which shows she is expressing her love to the target audience and her fans. This is attracting the audience and making her more likable and increasing her fans. She is also making direct contact with the reader, creating a bond between both individuals and making the reader feel valued, and develop a positive self-esteem. The lighting is again high key studio lighting which is common in pop magazines. This represents innocence and makes the image of Jessie stand out and become more appealing to the target audience. The image is a close-up to Jessie J’s emotions and features which make her beautiful. For instance, her eyes and lips are the first features the reader will notice, which will make the reader realise her beauty and gorgeousness.

The young Olly Murs is wearing a bright, striped shirt which also represents he is a pop, male artist. The clothing he is wearing is modern and simple, as this is what teenage boys currently wear. This shows his innocence and purity which each pop singer should be presented as. Olly is seen as a sexy, pretty boy, who young teenage girls are attracted to. In this image, you can tell that he uses a lot of products in his hair to make it perfect and slick. This is to show his perfection and it makes him more attractive and good looking.

The image of Olly is a medium close-up which creates all the focus on his face. The famous artist is not looking directly at the camera but looking away. This is effective as it emphasises his confidence and self-assurance, and making us acknowledge that he is sure of himself. His facial expressions and eye contact makes use aware that he knows girls fancy him. The background is a light, sky blue

shade which shows his masculinity as blue is a maleness colour. This also represents innocence and purity. Similarly to the other images, the lighting of the image is bright as this is the way pop represent pop artists. Moreover, this is another way to show that Olly is innocent and a charm, just like the readers.
