Bull 1

The academic bull is realistic but doesn't tell his reality ("Dans les premiers moments j'ai cru qu'il fallait seulement se defendre.").*

*"At first, I believed that I only had to defend myself."

Bull 2

He's become a caricature, laughable but imposes ("Je commence à comprendre: ils ont refermé derrière moi, ils ont eu peur que je recule.").*

*"I began to understand: they cower behind me, they are afraid I'll fight back."

Bull 3

His animal instincts are exposed, unromanticized to show the wounds he bears ("Je vais bien finir par l'avoir cette danseuse ridicule...").*

*"I will finish this. I'll get him, that ridiculous dancer..."

Bull 4

Cubism introduced. The development shows bull's personality ("Je vais l'attraper lui et son chapeau, les faire tourner comme un soleil.").*

*"I'll catch him and his hat, make them turn like the sun."

Bull 5

Picasso reaches a balance of what should be drawn and what wants to be drawn ("Ils ont frappé fort dans mon cou pour que je m'incline.").*

*"They struck my neck to make me bow."

Bull 6

Expression is gone. Reducing adds to his essence. I still feel tension, read the tragedy of the bull ("Est-ce que ce monde est sérieux?").*

*“Is this world serious?”

Bull 7

Picasso has become Picasso, not another Da Vinci. He can speak for himself and the bull ("Je les entends rire comme je râle.").*

*"I heard them laugh as I lost my breath."

This bull is my favorite because it's shows Picasso's hand as an artist. He doesn't conform with other artists. I respect his thoughtfulness in composing the lines and I love the gradient tone created because it creates a feeling of melancholy.

Bull 8

Stripped lines. Stripped excess. Stripped the unnecessary ("C'est fou comme ça peut faire du bien. J'ai prié pour que tout s'arrête.").*

*"It's crazy how this could make anyone smile. I prayed for everything to end."

Bull 9

Picasso sees things through a child's eyes, and sees more in the bull than clouded adults can ("Je les vois danser comme je succombe.").*

*"I saw them dance as I died."

Bull 10

The bull as we know him is dead; a new idea is born ("Je ne pensais pas qu'on puisse autant s'amuser autour d'une tombe.").*

*"I never thought that people could amuse themselves around a tomb."

Bull 11

The crowd, the festival are gone. At least we can see him now ("Hay que bailar de nuevo y mataremos otros; otras vidas y otros toros.").*

*"Let's dance again and we'll kill more; other lives and other bulls."
