1. 7 Minutes of ExerciseNot 10 minutes, not 8 minutes, 7. This is just short enough that it won’t impact the rest of your morning routine, but it’s long enough that you can shake off any residual sluggishness from the night before. There are an endless number of fitness routines you can use. One good one is the 7 minute Workout, which works all major muscle groups with 12 total exercises.

2. Go GreenBreakfast is of course the most important meal of the day, and it’s pretty easy to reach for a bagel, bowl of cereal, breakfast sandwich or yogurt to get your metabolism going. While these are all fine choices, a green smoothie can give you a great morning lift, and healthy juicing takes less time in the morning than toasting a bagel. One great mixi is one apple, one banana, one orange, a handful of spinach, half a cucumber, juice, some flax seed and a few ice cubes. It’s cheap, easy and keeps up your energy.

3. Pick 3 “Wins”

While you’re blending a smoothie, decide on three things you want to accomplish in the next 12 hours to feel like the day was successful. While not every day will prove a home run, strategizing this way will help you move forward.

4. Block Your CalendarOne of the most common mistakes is not turning to-do lists into effective project lists bound by time. Here’s how you do this: for each of the big things on your list, block off the amount of time on your calendar you think the task might take, and then add 33% more to be sure. If a project is multi-day or has dependencies, break it up into manageable chunks. This will help hold you accountable and immediately help you refocus on tasks.

5. Power Up Post-LunchTake 15 minutes right after lunch to refocus on the day as a sort of “professional meditation”. Get away from your computer, go sit in a conference room and figure out what you need to finish that day. Then think about how long the list you set in the morning is shaping up, and whether or not you’re ahead of or behind schedule. These 15 minutes can help you to identify how you got derailed, what’s causing you to get distracted and how to rediscover a rhythm to help you be productive for the rest of the day.
