Here are a few of the most important kinds of obedience training for your Shih Tzu

Leash trainingAs other dogs, your Shih Tzu need a lot of exercise. To walk

him nicely beside you, it is important to learn how to train a Shih Tzu getting used to his leash. Start by attaching the leash to his collar and letting him walk around with it dragging behind him. Once he is used to having the leash attached to him, walk with your pup on its leash inside the house, where the environment is familiar and with fewer distractions. Stop walking immediately if your pup pulls or tugs on the leash, try to discourage this by firmly commanding him to let go.

House trainingRemember that puppies cannot hold on for a long time. Bearing this in mind, try not to feed your pup close to bedtime, and make a habit of removing or emptying your pup’s water-bowl at night. To house train, pick out the area outside that you would like to teach your pup to use as the ‘toilet’. Every hour or so, take your pup directly to this spot and repeat a command word that you want the dog to associate with ‘toilet’. Remember to show praise whenever the pup uses the ‘toilet’.

Crate trainingBy teaching your pup that the crate is a safe, homely place for him where he can stay out of trouble, you create a personal environment for your puppy, who will grow to love the privacy of his crate. Simply choose a spacious crate for your pup and get him used to it by putting in treats for him to find and leaving surprise chew toys inside for him to play with. You can also feed your pup inside the crate – with the door open. Make sure that the crate is never used to enforce punishment or discipline.
