Giving gifts to friends, colleaguesand family, one of our many time-honoured holiday traditions usu-
ally means shopping, and that can be asrewarding as the giving.
The Townships is home to manyunique and interesting boutiques, dis-playing and selling antiques, clothingand speciality goods, some of themtucked away in out-of-the-ordinary yetvery reachable places.
Take for example À La Carte in Knowl-ton.
This shop uses a cooperative businessmodel, and as a result, offers visitors aone-stop shopping experience, a “centreof individuality and creativity” as itsblog entry suggests.
“We’ve got 10 businesses displayingtheir goods, so for now we’re not lookingfor new members,” said Judith Duncan-son, owner of one of the antique busi-nesses.
And that’s a very good thing for shop-pers.
Imagine the selection. Ten fine craftartisans and antique buyers and sellerseach offering the finest they have for theseason.
You’ll find handcrafted silver andturquoise jewellery, hand-braided rugs, vintage hats, clothing, accessories anddecorative arts, custom-made lamps and
lampshades, and an excellent collectionof antiques, from relaxed country to tra-ditional elegance.
“Everyone has something on sale, oras a special for Christmas,” she said.
One of their most popular features isthe sale of gift certificates.
“Many have gifts to buy for peoplewho they don’t see during the rest of theyear and who they don’t have a clueabout what to get for them. Our gift cer-tificates are great for our out-of-townguests with a shopping trip to our shop,”added Duncanson.
The cooperative model the groupadopted when they decided to rent thespace in 2008 offers each business ownerthe benefit of having group support.
“We each look after our own productsand its display, we also look after all theother members’ too, and that’s not justin the shop either, but in our personallives too,” she said.
Each member pays a fee to join, thenoffers regular hours every week of theirtime to sell not only their own productsbut those of all the members.
