TIME FOR A NEW MATTRESS?

If your current mattress has seen better days and you’re thinking of replacing it, there are several factors that need to be taken

into account before making that important decision.

1.) SHOP AROUND

It’s important to shop around and pick the right mattress, and it’s certainly a decision that shouldn’t be made quickly.

• Shop for the mattress with whoever is sleeping on it.

• Some people prefer a firmer mattress for additional support, whilst others prefer a softer mattress they can sink into.

• Try out each mattress: lie down on the bed to get an idea of how it feels.

2.) CHOOSING A SIZE Mattresses are available in lots of different sizes, so make sure you choose one that will fit in your bedroom.

These are the typical mattress sizes available in the UK:

Don’t forget to bear in mind the size of your bed frame too when it comes to choosing a size.

3.) MATTRESS TYPES

Continuous/open coil

Fitted with a single looped wire or several springs fixed together, these standard mattresses are reasonably priced but do compromise on comfort.

Pocket sprung mattresses

These contain bed springs sewn into individual pockets of fabric, which means each coil is able to separately absorb your weight. These mattresses provide better support and comfort than continuous or open coil mattresses.

Latex and foam mattresses

These mattress types are resistant to dust mites, making them an ideal choice for allergy sufferers. Crafted from durable foam, they provide breathable bedding whilst moulding to your unique body shape.

Memory Foam mattresses

These are popular due to their mouldable qualities. They conform to fit the shape of your body and thus offer superb support. This much-loved extra support tends to come with a price tag though, and these mattresses often cost more than their alternatives.

4.) HEALTH CHECK

If you have back problems or suffer from certain health conditions, sleeping on the wrong mattress can make matters

worse. The right mattress should help relieve any stress on your body whilst you sleep, rather than keep you awake with aches

and pains.

5.) SUPPORT

You need a mattress that isn’t too firm or too soft, providing the right level of support. Many purchase

orthopaedic mattresses to ease their pains, but others may find these too firm and unsuitable.

The Perfect Choice To test whether your mattress is the correct firmness for you, lie down on your back and slide your hand under the small of your back.

If it fits perfectly then the bed is just right.

Be sure to seek advice when testing the firmness of your mattress.
