Advantages and Disadvantages of Fabric Embellishment

INTRODUCTION

• Embellishment is to make an item or a product better than what it is already.

• It can be used in many things like; music, poetry, art, textiles.

• Textile embellishment refers to the process of adding color, pattern, texture or design to fabric through the use of outside mediums such as thread, ribbon, sequins, yarns, buttons, buttonholes and more (Atwood, 2008).

Definitions • To make something more attractive by adding

decorations Or

• To make a story more interesting by adding details which may not be true

• The embellishment on fabric can be achieved through printing, tie-dye, batik, stencils, lamination, bonding and dyeing (Oladipo).

Important Features of Embellishment

• Whether we want to embellish personal fabrics or it is for commercial reason, there are many different ways to embellish clothes.

• The most important thing which one keep in the mind while embellishing the fabric is “principles of arts”. The design should have balance, proportion, emphasis, variety, movement, rhythm, and harmony.

Important Features of Embellishment

One color different styles

• One color but different types of embellishment gives freedom of purchase and decision making, from color, style, cost, likes and dislikes etc.

Method

• Nature of the study:• It was quantitative in approach. Survey method was

used. • Population of the study:• Teachers of textiles and clothing from Pakistan were

taken as population. • Sampling Design:• Samples were selected by non probility purposive

sampling, the population should be teacher of textiles in any university of Pakistan.

• Data Collection Procedure:• A questionnaire survey was self-administered among

teachers of textiles and clothing to identify the significance of embellishment in fabrics. Questionnaires were given to 20 teachers of textiles from different areas of Pakistan. 15 of the questionnaires were filled and given back to researcher.

• Data Analysis:• Data was analyzed thematically. Codes and themes

were drive from the detailed answer given by the participants.

Result and Discussion

Term Embellishment Means

• Anything extra added to the fabric surface to enhance its beauty.

• Make the fabric eye catching.• Any addition surface beautification.• Make fabric elegant and attractive with different

techniques.

Importance of Embellishment

• Embellishment is important as decorative detail or feature added to something to make it more attractive.

• Add value of the fabric. • To make a product better than what it is already. • To add beauty and increase profit in fabric. • Make fabric good according to the taste and demand

of consumer.

Gender and Embellishment

• It is necessary for both male and females fabrics if enhance the beauty.

• There must be some limits of embellishment for male fabrics and even for female fabrics.

Self Confidence and Embellishment

• Inner satisfaction is important for self confident; if embellishment gives inner satisfaction then yes it is important.

Age and Embellishment

• Yes the age plays a vital role in the fabric embellishment.

• It also depends upon the likes and dislikes of individual which vary from individual to individual.

• Type of embellishment can have a concert with age not embellishment alone.

Embellishment Role in Formal and Informal wears

• Embellishment is important for both, depend on type of embellishment we are using.

• Light embroidery, different pleats, gathered, dyeing and printing can easily use in informal fabrics.

Advantages of Embellishment

• Identity.• Creativity.• Add beauty to the fabric.• Increase the value of the fabric.• Shows the personality of the wearer.• Outlet for aesthetic expression.• Attract consumers.• Simple material can be convert into many styles and

shapes.

Disadvantages of Embellishment

• More expensive.• Less durable.• Difficult to handle like washing and ironing etc.• Need extra care during handling.• Adding details which may not be true.• Addition of extraneous embellishment through

dishonesty.• Heavily embellished fabrics are less wearable.

Favorite Embellishment

Formal wear• Dabka with semi precious

stones.• Sequence work.• Zardozi work• Gota work• Beats work

Informal wear• Buttons• pleats,• printing, • light thread embroidery,• Patch work• Mirror work

Conclusion• Products which enhance the beauty of the fabric is

known as fabric embellishment. • The embellishment may be removable attached to

clothing by use of double-sided, hook and loop fasteners, pins, snaps, button loops or other buttoning attachments and embroidery motives.

• Embellishment gives elegant and wealthy look to the garments.

Conclusion• Fabric embellished while keeping the elements of

arts together to form a good design is very necessary.

• It's very difficult to include much decoration in ever day wearing fabric today because simplicity is preferred by people. It is ease in mass-production, as well as it is part of Modernism.

• In formal wear people prefer more colorful and embellished garment.

Conclusion• Keeping the eastern culture in Pakistan men’s

clothing is more embellished with embroidery and other techniques then western dresses.

• Embellishment should be done according to the age of the wearer.

• In the whole we can say that without embellishment the fabric is like life without color.
