Background

•DRDF was established in 1996 by interested cattle breeders, extension workers, and

the milk industry.

•A charitable, non-profitable, non-political and non-government organization (NGO).

•Registered under the Societies Registration Act, XXI, 1860 of Joint Stock Companies,

Lahore, Punjab.

•Provides a platform to create links between farmers, self employed breed

technicians, and dairy development agencies working for the dairy sector betterment

in the country.

Cholistani Cow: • Multipurpose breed used for both

milk and meat.

Therparker Cow: • Having good tolerance of water and

feed scarcity

• Annual milk yield > 1200 liters

The Dairy Project

The Dairy Project

• The Dairy Project is a combined effort of UNITED States Agency for

International Development (donor) and Dairy and Rural Development

Foundation (implementing partner) to foster sustainable increase in

livestock productivity through farmer training, breed improvement,

availability of timely extension services and promotion of livestock

businesses.

• Due to the vital importance of livestock sector in the rural economy of

Pakistan, the project’s activities will play an important role in

transforming livelihoods of rural communities.

• Target Areas: All four provinces, with major focus on Punjab;

within Punjab mainly South Punjab

• Funding: USAID grant of USD 14 Million, (DRDF will provide 20

percent of additional costs (over and above USD 14 Million)

• Time Frame: 3 years, (July 2011 to July 2014)

• Target Beneficiaries: Rural population connected to the livestock

sector

• Field offices in Chichawatni, Pir Mahal, and Multan

• A.I training: Burj Attari, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi

• Farmer Training: Currently at NPL Sukheki, NPL Sarsabz, Kamalia, and

Khanewal

• WLEW Training: Village clusters (currently in tehsils Kamalia, Toba Tek Singh,

Shorkot and Chichwatni).

Components

• Farmer Trainings: 9000 Farmers and 100 Farm Managers to be

trained in best dairy farm practices.

• Artificial Insemination Technician Trainings: 2000 persons to be

trained and established as A.I Technicians.

• Women Livestock Workers Trainings: 5000 women to be trained as

livestock health workers and livestock business entrepreneurs.

• Mass Awareness Program: Awareness of best farm practices

through electronic and print media and other mass awareness

tools.

A.I. Technician Training Support

Trainings and Support for Dairy Farmers

• Following three types of trainings are offered for the

farmers/aspiring farm managers:

• 2-day (farmers with at least 4 adult dairy animals),

• 4-day (farmers with at least 10 adult dairy animals),

• 1-month (farmers with at least 20 adult dairy animals and aspiring

farm managers).

• The trained dairy farmers and farm mangers will be supported by

initial kits.

Training and Support for Artificial and Insemination Technicians

2000 persons will be trained as AITs.

• Training course duration – 5 weeks + 2 months follow up in field.

• Certification by UVAS/PVTC

• Practical trainings covered at Slaughter House, Lahore.

• AITs will be supported with motorbikes and AIT Kits.

Training and Support for Women Livestock Extension Workers

• About 2000 women will be trained as Livestock Health Workers for

provision of primary veterinary and health services.

• Each trainee will get 6 weeks class room training and will be certified by

UVAS.

• A medicine kit will be provided to all Livestock Health Workers.

• The training will be followed by 1-2 months through follow-up support by

project team.

Progress

• 3591 Dairy farmers have been providing with training on best dairy farm practices.

• 1147 Women have been Trained as WLES’s.

• 525 AIT’s have been trained.
