It was a dark, moonless night when Lord Ram, thebanished king of Ayodhya returned home along withhis wife, Sita after having vanquished the demon,Ravan (King of Lanka who had abducted Sita) andhaving completed 14 years in exile.To honour and rejoice the homecoming of theirking, the people of his kingdom lit his path with oillamps to guide him on his way. Thus began thetradition of decorating homes and public spaceswith earthenware oil lamps (diyas) to mark thetriumph of good over evil, light over darkness andthe five day celebration came to be known as Diwalior Deepavali which means rows of lights/lamps. 3. Diwali, the festival of lights, is a much lovedfestival celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jainsthroughout the world. The festival ushers in aperiod of merriment a time to revel in thecompany of loved ones, dress up infinery and gorge on delicious dishesprepared for the event.
