Part of the normal life cycle of women.
Begins in a woman’s 40’s or early 50’s.
Average age being 51 yrs.
Period of life when a woman ceases
to have her menstrual period for one full
year.
Perimenopausal Period :- Period leading
up to menopause
WHAT IS MENOPAUSE ..?
Women fear growing old.
They think negative about
menopause.
Increased life expectancy
Changed social scenario

Female Reproductive Tract
Ovaries are
the organs
that produce
eggs and
hormones :-
Estrogen
and
Progesteron
• Maintain regular menstrual cycles.
• Keep the skin moist, soft and supple.
• Keep the bones healthy.
• Protect the heart by maintaining
cholesterol levels.
HARMONES PRODUCED BY
OVARIES HELP TO:
Changes begin when ovarian function
decline, ovaries eventually stop
producing eggs and no longer produce
hormones.
CHANGES OF MENOPAUSE
SHORT TERM :
Menstrual changes
Hot flushes and disturbed sleep.
Irritability, mood changes.
Depression, lack of well being.
Lack of interest in sexual relations.
CONSEQUENCES OF MENOPAUSE
Dryness in vagina, irritation, itching.
Sudden and frequent urination.
Dysparunia.
Increased risk of vaginal and urinary tract infections.
CONSEQUENCES…..
Brittle bones :- More risk of # of bones.Increased risk of cardiac ailments.Thinner, Wrinkled skin with blemishes.Problems with concentration and memory

MODIFICATIONS
Balanced diet• Major nutrients for the body are
protein, carbohydrate, and fat.
• Body also needs vitamins and minerals for optimal functioning.
• It is important to choose foods from all food groups like cereals, pulses, poultry and meat, milk and milk products, fruits and vegetables to form a balanced diet.

• High fiber

• calcium rich
• plenty of water
REGULAR EXERCISES
• WALKING
• CYCLING
• SWIMMING - 30 Minutes daily
• DANCING - 5 times a week

• Increases flexibility
• Reduces stress
• Maintains mobility of joints
• Maintains optimum weight
WEIGHT MANAGEMENT
Optimum weight for height should be maintained
POSITIVE ATTITUDE

• Avoid stress
Hot Flush :
•Try sleeping in a cool room.
•When hot flush starts, go
somewhere cool.
•Have a cold drink at the
beginning of flush.
SPECIFIC MANAGEMENT

•Use a water based lubricant or
estrogen cream.
Urinary Complaint :
Not able to hold urine.
•Learn pelvic Exercises.
•Bladder training Exercises.
Unusually prolonged and heavy menstrual period.
Bleeding between menstrual period.
Renewed bleeding after having no period for 6 months or more.
Symptoms like hot flushes, disturbed sleep, mood swings that start interfering with daily life.
Vaginal pain, dryness. Signs of Urinary tract infection.

CANCER SCREENING
DO NOT IGNORE
• Non tender lump in breast
• Change in shape or size of breast
• Retracted nipple
• Discharge from nipple -blood stained or greenish
• Self Breast examination
• Clinical breast examination
• Mammography
SCREENING
• Females should start SBE by the age of 20 yrs
• Should be done every month to be breast aware.
• Best time to do SBE is with in one week after period.
• Advantage of BSE is early detection of tumor
• There are 5 steps in the examination of breast
SELF BREAST EXAMINATION
• Should be done by a Clinician once in 3 yrs till the age of 40 yrs
• After 40 yrs CBE should be done every year
CLINICAL BREAST EXAMINATION
• Mammography is a specific type of imaging that uses a low-dose x-ray system to examine breasts.
• Should be done annually after the age of 40 yrs
The best time for a mammogram is one week following period

• Post coital bleeding
• Irregular bleeding
• Foul smelling discharge p/v
• Post menopausal bleeding
• Pap test
• Colposcopy
• Cervical biopsy
SCREENING
WORD OF CAUTION !!!!
Ovarian cancer can be hard to detect early. symptoms may be vague and quite mild. Most usual SYMPTOMS are :
Feeling bloatedA dull, dragging pain in theabdomenConstipation or diarrhoeaFeeling sick and loss of apettite
.
• As yet no screening tests are available.
• Women with strong family history can undergo--
Annual ultra sonography.
• Serum CA-125 levels.

• Do not ignore your health
• Give sufficient time to yourself
• Get preventive clinical checkup done at least once a year after 40 years of age.
