Celebrating Love With Raksha Bandhan
By Shamuns Flowers
Raksha Bandhan is a festival that celebrates the relationship between a brother and a sister. It recognizes the love that they share and the duties implied in their relationship. It is celebrated mainly in India, Mauritius, parts of Nepal and Pakistan.
Over the years this festival has attained a secular status and has grown beyond its
traditional roots. Today it is celebrated even by men and women who may not be biologically related. A bond of love is universal and hence irrespective of an
individual’s religion or beliefs the festival of Raksha Bandhan appeals to all.

To celebrate this festival the sister ties a Rakhi,
which can be a colourful woven thread or an
accessory like a bracelet, on the brother’s wrist.
Literally translated
Rakhsa Bandhan meant knot of protection, the
brother promises to always protect his sister
and take care of her. After the rakhi has been tied a small pooja and
arti is done.

These gifts can be simple tokens of affection or elaborate gestures. The
Rakhi’s that a sister ties can also vary greatly from simple colourful treads to
those made from gold and silver. Nowadays expensive watches are also sometimes used in place of traditional
Rakhis. There are many variations to the specific details of how Raksha Bandhan is celebrated around the world but the main
premise remains the same.

The Hindu religion is known for having many festivals and ceremonies that celebrate love and emphasise familial relationships. There are many myths and
anecdotes attached to the celebration of this festival. Rajput queens were known for sending rachis to neighbouring rulers as a show of brotherhood.

There is some debate on the accuracy of a
few of these anecdotes but there is no denying
that the festival of Rakha Bandhan has
been around for many years and its simple
celebration of love has appealed to generations.
