Moving into a new home can be a very exciting and terrifying task. To make it an efficient move, you have to avoid these five common mistakes:

When moving, you should take your time and plan in advance. Furthermore, here are the things you should remember before moving into your new home:

1. Connect & disconnect your utilities

• Inform your suppliers about your move so that your new home will be connected before you move in. Make sure that your current home will be disconnected so that you will not incur any charges.

2. Change your address & redirect mail

• Create a list of people who needs to know about your new address so that you will not lose touch. Redirect your mails to your new address especially your bills and important letters. Consider a six-month redirect service via the Post Office to capture anything you’ve missed.

3. Pack Efficiently

• Packing should be planned and done in advance. Make a checklist of the important things to ensure that all the essentials are at hand. Appropriately pack stuff distinct boxes and put a label on it.

4. Get The House Cleaned!

• Give your new home a clean up for a better move. Get rid of the pesky critters that may be lurking within the walls and rooms of your new home. Once cleaned, you can do a little renovation to give it a new look before moving in.

5. Change The Locks

• For security purposes, it’s recommended to change the locks before moving in. You don’t know who else holds the same key, so, it’s better to change it right away. You can install new deadbolts yourself or you can request a locksmith to do the job.

6. Check The Electrical Wirings

• Be familiar with the circuit breaker box and check if it is still functioning. If you are not sure, you can contact an electrician. Make sure that there are no faulty wirings and fix broken light fixture.

7. Find The Water Shut Off Valve

• Before moving in, it is important that you know where the water valve is. Certainly, you would be delighted to know where the water valve is in times of plumbing emergencies. Test it by turning on any faucet in the house and check if it is not leaking or if there’s no water coming out.

8. Plan Ahead For Kids & Pets

• When moving, you should avoid tagging your pets or your children along. Instead, ask your friends or family to watch over them until you are done moving your stuff. Or, you can have a baby sitter to watch over them. Plan this in advance to avoid hassle.

9. Make Sure You’re Insured

• Don’t forget to move your insurance policy to your new home. If you have hired a removal company, make sure to check what they provide and its exclusions. Sometimes, damage can occur while moving stuff, which is why it is important that your new home is insured.

10. Choose The Right Storage Boxes

• In packing your things and before hiring a removal company, you have to choose the right storage boxes. It is good to recycle but don’t use old boxes with food stains on it. Instead, purchase new boxes to securely pack and ensure a successful move with minimal damage.
