decision

making

What data you have in hand to base your decision on? The last thing you want is to base your decision solely on thoughts and beliefs

What do you deeply think about the issue? Do you feel in peace and optimistic about your decision?

Have you consulted your team on the issue? What do they think of this decision?

Get their buy-in for a smooth execution

afterwards

The Gut/Intuition

employee

feedback

The Subordinates

How do you rate employee’s performance as a direct report to you? Remember to look at performance objectives in all cases

How the employee’s direct reports think of him/her? Are there any signs of bad management behavior such as inept criticism?

What others on the same level think of the employee? Do

they see him/her aligned and helpful towards common goals

of the team?

problem

solving

The Context

You don’t want to try to solve a problem without defining it clearly first! What are the facts that you could get your hands on to solve the problem?

What is the big picture of this problem? What else is affected by it? Knowing the context can open up horizons of solutions

Our thinking is sometimes negatively affected by

assumptions. Challenge your mental model and explore

your assumptions and (in)validate them

conflict

resolution

A Neutral View

Listening to all parties involved is a must to see their own perspectives on what caused the conflict and how to solve it

A neutral outsider will help get things balanced. This could be someone outside the hierarchy or even outside the organization such as your wife

Since you’re the judge (the manager of the team who have the conflict, for instance), your

view is important but not sufficient as you might get

biased after all

quality

How log do/did the project take to finish? scheduling, work breakdown structure, and sequencing a project all affect its time

How much do/did the project cost to deliver?

budgeting, cost estimation, and cost control all affect

final project cost

ScopeWhat was the requirements in-scope and out-of-scope of this project? Was there any scope changes or creeps?

changing

behavior

Opportunity

How motivated is the person to change his or her behavior? this usually deals with the spirit and energy!

Is the person empowered and have the right environment to change his or her behavior? This is a work on pathway and action

Does the person have the confidence, intelligence, skill, and

resources to change his or her behavior? This is a work on brain

and skill

exposurein photography

Sensor Sensitivity

How fast your camera is going to open for light to hit the sensor? The higher the speed the freezier the photo is going to be, which is good for motion photography

How sensitive your camera sensor is going to be? the larger the ISO, the more noisy the photo, which is needed for night photography

How large the lens opening is going to be? The larger the aperture, the blurrier the image is going to be,

which is good for portrait macro photography
