A tragic flaw is . . .
A good characteristic that, when taken to an extreme, has tragic consequences.
Can perfectionism be a tragic flaw?
It can be if it causes:
• Missed deadlines
• Incomplete tasks
• Unrealistic expectations
Getting hung up on meaningless details and spending more time on
projects than is necessary.
What is a perfectionist?
You may be a perfectionist if you:
Give every project equal attention
Get stuck in “analysis paralysis”
Feel frustrated due to lack of time
Focus on the outcome, not the journey
. . . or if you:
Notice the errors rather than results
Avoid things you don’t excel at
Have difficulty delegating tasks
Ask for help2.
If you’re not sure which projects should be at the top of your priority list, ask for help from a team member or manager.
Don’t wait for every last detail before you get started. Whatever info you’re missing will trickle in as you go.
Stop procrastinating3.
Timers can be effective tools for managing time spent on a project. When the timer goes off, move on to another project.
Set a time limit for yourself4.
As a perfectionist, you may have an overly critical attitude toward those you work with.
