Jakarta is located on the northwest coast of Java

The average elevation of Jakarta is 8 metres (26 ft) above sea level

40% of the areas are below sea level

Flood is one of the main problem in JakartaIt happens almost every yearIn the last 20 years, it happens in 1994,

1996, 1997, 1999, 2002, 2007, 2008, 2013, and 2014.

According to Indonesia’s Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology, the material loss from the 2014’s flood was around 12 trillion rupiah or around 1 billion USD

System◦Lack of drainage system◦Development from the government is not fast enough

Human◦ Irresponsibly citizen are throwing the garbage to the

river

What Should We Do?

Household◦Be responsible of our own waste. Do not throw the garbage

to the street nor the river

Community◦Give a knowledge sharing about the flood and how to

prevent it

Enterprise Sector◦Control the industrial waste so that it won’t cause any harm

to the environment◦Make a program to help the community or household get

the knowledge about flood

What Should We Do?

Financial System◦ Prepare the budget to help coping with this situation

State◦ Prepare the infrastructure to prevent and cope with the

flood◦ Give strict regulations to prevent people and companies

from doing bad things to the environment

International Community◦ Funding support for the social or local community◦ Seminar or knowledge sharing for the local community

Handling the Risk

Knowledge◦ Every person and company should understand the

knowledge about flood, the cause, and how to prevent it

Protection◦ Government and the citizen should help protecting the

neighborhood by not doing things that cause the flood, and do the things that help prevent the flood

Insurance◦ Individual and companies should also have insurance to

help them cope incase the flood happens

Conclusion

The risk of flood in Jakarta is a big problem, but it is possible to do something to manage it

The coordination between all of the sectors from the household to the international community is needed to manage this risk
