Local Stations
(example Isle of Wight Radio)
Local radio stations are owned by small companies or larger firms that control the radios sister stations.
Isle of Wight Radio is owned by Media sound Holdings after merging with the previous company. MsH also owns Splash FM. A station that operates along the south coast of England.
Most local radio stations in the same place as Isle of Wight radio are operated as commercial radio stations.
Radio Vectis is also a local radio station that is commercially run.
All these radio stations can only be listened to in a part of a country. E.g. you cannot listen to Isle of Wight radio in Yorkshire.
National Radio Stations
(examples BBC, Heart)
The BBC owns eleven BBC national stations as well as Radio Scotland, Wales and others
The BBC has forty two local radio stations!
The BBC stations do not play adverts on them so they can keep an unbiased opinion.
National radio stations make money by hosting events like concerts, through syndication contracts. E.g. BBC Radio 2 having Chris Evans as a DJ.
Other national radio stations, like Heart that is owned by Global Radio generates income through advertising.
International Radio Stations
This is broadcasting that is purposely is aimed at a foreign audience.
Examples of international radio- TuneIn radio. Allows you to listen to radio anywhere.
International radio is radio that can be heard anywhere around the world.
International radio came into being during the cold war.
The BBC owns its own national radio station, BBC World Service.
