Half full or half empty?

I was having lunch with my four year old son

On the table was a cup from which he'd been drinking

I’d been through management school so,

curious to hear his reply, I asked him

“Is this cup half full or half empty?”

His reply surprised me...

He paused and looked at me with confusion

Then he said

“It’s both, daddy - the cup is half full AND half

empty”

In the moment, I’d been so convinced that he’d opt either for empty or full, his perspective

astonished meI felt a little silly; a four year old boy had seen

something afresh, side-stepping the metaphor

which management school had conditioned

me to see

To accept a single

perspective isn’t enough

Just as the cup can be half

empty and half full

simultaneously, so too there are both positives and negatives

in many situations

Taking the time to consider different points of view can

help in many ways

It’s a question of balance

and there are many examples

in nature

water

Have realistic expectations

of yourself and others

Try to understand other peoples’ points of view

Next time you think of someone as a

“glass half empty of glass half full”

kind of person, remember…
