I was having lunch with my four year old son

On the table was a cup from which he'd been drinking

I’d been through management school so,

curious to hear his reply, I asked him

“Is this cup half full or half empty?”

His reply surprised me...

He paused and looked at me with confusion

Then he said

“It’s both, daddy - the cup is half full AND half

empty”

In the moment, I’d been so convinced that he’d opt either for empty or full, his perspective

astonished meI felt a little silly; a four year old boy had seen

something afresh, side-stepping the metaphor

which management school had conditioned

me to see

To accept a single

perspective isn’t enough

Just as the cup can be half

empty and half full

simultaneously, so too there are both positives and negatives

in many situations
