MEANING 'ESPRIT DE CORPS' here means team spirit andteam work. This principle emphasizes on teamwork. 'UNITY IS STRENGTH' is the essence of thisprinciple. Fayol suggested that there should be ateam spirit in the organisation and all theemployees must consider themselves as memberof the organisation. Organizations should striveto promote team spirit and unity.
An example of esprit de corps is a group marchingto bring awareness to a current issue.
THEORIES
The principle of ‘ESPRIT DE CORPS’ isbased on two theories:
i.) Unity is Strength
ii.) Unity of staff is the foundation of successin any organisation
IMPACTS
Positive impacts of this principle: Achievement of group goals. Development of team spirit. High morale of employees. Cooperation and coordination in the
organisation.Consequences of violation of this principle: Non-achievement of the organisational
objectives. Conflicting environment in the organisation. Lacks maximum participation from employees.
IMPORTANCE
Team work is essential in corporate for betteroutput and a better bonding among employees.
Tasks are accomplished at a faster pace when it isdone by a team rather than an individual.
Work never suffers or takes a backseat in a team.
There is always a healthy competition among theteam members.
Team work is also important to improve therelations among the employees.
Team members can also gain from each other.
BUILDING UNITY & TEAM SPIRITThese are some of the areas managers may want to look towhen considering how they can build their team spirit:
Co-operation amongst team members should be encouraged
Clear the decks of unnecessary clutter
