DESCRIPTION

Every day we are faced with making decisions. Situations arise that are both planned and unplanned for. Often times the decisions we make will have a direct impact on the bottom line as well as on how the community will perceive our overall brand. When we are faced with making choices and decisions, there are times when stretching the truth, or not telling the truth or behaving in a way that we know is not really correct can lead to a better presentation or end result, but is that doing the right thing? Is doing the right thing so important that if in doing so may cause a less than desirable outcome, is it OK as long as nobody really gets hurt? In this session, Jay will lead a discussion on the importance of “Doing the Right Thing.” Jay will provide some real case histories from his professional experience and talk about how doing both the wrong and the right thing could have led to different outcomes and what ultimately the decisions were. The goal is for leaders in attendance to think more deeply about what it means to be courageous enough to do the right things and how this could lead to future advancement. Presented by Jay Zollar, Vice President/General Manager, WLUK FOX 11 / WCWF CW14

While working for another television station, the CEO decided he wanted to move Little House on the Prairie from 3-4pm so the Jerry Springer Show could be aired there. This was in the days when Jerry Springer was known for extremely foul language, hitting and screaming episodes. The show did slightly better ratings than Little House on the Prairie amongst adults 18-49 years of age. Do you think moving Little House on the Prairie out of the 3-4pm time period for Jerry Springer was the “right” thing to do?

Case Study 1

We had done a co-promotion with a large retailer who happened to spend a lot of money with us in advertising as well. At the end of the promotion, a winner had to have his or her items scanned at the register and the person closest to, without going over $1,000 would win the items they had gathered in 5 minutes. One person had pre-shopped and knew that his items would be $999.97. When he had his items scanned, the cash register showed $1000.03. There was an issue with the scanners. Although this retailer spent thousands of dollars with the station in advertising, how would you handle this knowing that we are a news station?

Often times we get requests from potential advertisers that if we are willing to do a news story on their grand opening that they will spend more money on us in advertising. How would you decide what to do?

“The battle to succeed against our competitors should be fought on the streets, not inside our own building. I must have leaders that I can trust so I can focus my energy on the battle against the competition, not waste energy on resolving internal issues of people I can not trust.” Jay Zollar
