WHAT IS MESOTHELIOMA?• Mesothelioma in its malignant form is a
type of cancer that encases the tissues of the lungs, the heart or other internal organs.
• Although similar, it is not the same as lung cancer or asbestosis. The most prevalent form of mesothelioma is the “pleural” form, and is responsible for approximately 70% of meso cases.
• This is a cancer of the lining of the lungs caused specifically by exposure to asbestos fibers.
• Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that is specifically caused by the inhalation of asbestos fibers. Asbestos is mineral that occurs naturally and is valued for its special fireproofing and heat insulation properties.
