What the ILO is? • The International Labour
Organization(ILO) is a specialized agency of the United Nation system which seeks the promotion of social justice and internationally recognized human and labour rights.
ILO( International Labor Organization)
• Established in 1919 as a part of league of nation.• Only international body that survived even after 2nd
world war.• Become specialized agency of U.N.s in 1946.• Aim at world peace through social justice.• India become original signatory member in 1919.• Draw attention on various problem like: working
condition, unemployment, industrial accidents, disease, problem of women and young persons and children.
International Labor Organization• It is three-party body: representative of employer, labor and
government.• Till now 183 nation are member of ILO.• Fundamental principle:• Labor is not a commodity.• Freedom of expression and association is essential.• Poverty act is a danger for prosperity.• War against want required to be carried on, worker and
employer should enjoy equal status in free decision.
Function of ILO• Manpower organization and vocational training• Migrant worker• Women worker• Social security • Condition of work• Health, safety and welfare

Objectives of ILOThe ILO has four principle strategic objectives:• To promote and realize standards and fundamental
principles and rights at work:• To create greater opportunities for women and men to
secure decent employment:• To enhance the coverage and effectiveness of social
protection for all:• To strengthen tripartism and social dialogue.
The League of Nation • The league of nation was to be an
organization where representatives of the world’s Nation would meet settle their difference by discussion instead of war. It was founded in Geneva Switzerland in 1919.
Background• In the year 1914 the world was
involved in a conflict (the Great War).• The war had finished in 1918 and the
treaty of Versailles was created. • It was the peace settlement signed
after world war One.
The Point Fourteen• In 1918, the president of the United States
Woodrow Wilson gave a speech with a special contribution called “The Fourteen Points”
• “Point # 14: A general association of nations must be formed under specific conventions for the purpose of affording mutual guarantees of political independence and territorial integrity to great and small states alike”.
The Organization• The official languages of the league were English,
French and Spaish• The permanent member were:• Britian• Italy• France• Japan
Goals of the League• To avert future conflict as devastating as the world
war one.• To strengthen the condition of the treaty of
Versailles.• To help countries in crisis (economic and healthy).
The Successes• Despite the weaknesses of the league, this
organization had some successes in some conflict:The successes: The Aland Islands• Sweden and Finland disputed the possession of the
Aland Island.• However, the island had traditionally belonged to
Finland and the League decided in favor of Finland.
The Successes: Greece and Bulgaria• It is a result of a border conflict where Greece decide
to invade Bulgaria after the Bulgarian militaries killed a Greek soldier.
• Nevertheless, the League intervened and order the withdrawal of the Greek Army and a economic sanction.
Aims of the League of Nations• Stop war
• Improve peoples lives• Trade co-operation• Enforce the peace treaties e.g. Treaty of Versailles• Disarmament
