01WHAT ISBLADDERCANCER?

Cancer of the bladder has become the mostcommon forms of cancer and affects around tenthousand people in the UK every year. This type ofbladder cancer makes up about approximately 90% of all cases and can be divided into a pair ofgroups: 1. Superficial tumours the commonest kind andoccurs in approximately eighty percent of cases.These types of tumours rarely spread and have ahigh probability of being cured.2. 02 CAUSESOF BLADDERCANCER?

Cancer of the bladder is caused by changes to thestructure of cells in the bladder. This type ofcancer affects the way cells grow in the bladder,resulting in a tumour.

There are many contributory factors which cancontribute towards this change, but one of themajor links to bladder cancer is the exposure toharmful substances whilst at work. The risk ofbladder cancer also increases if you smoke, dueto carcinogenic chemicals contained in tobacco.

03DIAGNOSINGBLADDERCANCER

If you or a loved one is experiencing symptomslinked to bladder cancer, such as in your urine, thefirst point of contact should be your GP. Usually,your GP will enquire about the symptoms , yourgeneral health and family history and whether youhave worked with carcinogenic chemicals or haveever smoked cigarettes, both of which are linked tobladder cancer. In some instances, your GP mayperform an examination of the vagina and/or rectum,in order to discover lumps. Additionally, a sample ofurine may be requested, to test for blood, relatedbacteria and abnormal cells. At times this test maynot produce accurate results and additional testingis usually necessary for diagnosis.

04WHO'S AT RISKOF BLADDERCANCER

Each year over Approximately 10,400 people arediagnosed with bladder cancer in the UK. CancerResearch UK places bladder cancer as the 7thmost common cancer in the UK and the fourth mostcommon cancer in men. There were over seventhousand reported cases diagnosed in 2010, 4500more than the 2,900 cases reported in women forthe same period. It's believed that the reasonbehind this is due to the fact that there have beenmore men than women smokers in the past fewdecades and more men working in themanufacturing industry coming in contact withharmful industrial chemicals (two of the top causesof bladder cancer).
