Special feature Catering Manager Raj van Dijk on CC Culture A new feature of the alumni newsletter is a personal interview with people that work at the Amsterdam office about work atmosphere and their own passions

How did you join us

Almost a year ago my predecessor Arjan Visser and I swapped places I came from a colleague-office at the Zuidas and went to a historic building in the city centre That the difference would be this big I could not have foreseen At both locations catering has been outsourced but over here as Catering Manager you truly are a member of the facilities team You easily feel part of Clifford Chance The CC feeling is working hard but with a common goal in mind and a will to achieve this together

When did you choose a catering profession

I have a catering background graduating from the Hotel School and

Amsterdam alumni newsletter 5

working in five star hotels at the national airport and Noordwijk aan Zee In 2007 I made a career switch and worked as facility support for the Managing Board of ABN AMRO Unfortunately that position ended in 2009 after the acquisition by Fortis At that time OSP Catering asked me for a project at the Zuidas

What do you normally do during a routine work day

The nice thing about this job is that not a single day is alike One day youll be peeling potatoes in the kitchen and the next day you walk around in a suit in the client area The important thing is that our clients are perfectly taken care of in this area Managing staff and a good cooperation with the PAC is very important Offering that cold glass of water or fresh fruit salad at the right moment contributes to stay in the right flow And of course its very important that people can start their lunch at 12am sharp Together with chef Brian we try to prepare a healthy and varied menu

How do you regard the cooperation between fee earners and Business Services

You really operate here as a team Its nice to see that when a deal closes there is always a word of gratitude for

BS staff This increases the pride of CC and the sense of solidarity

Appointments

Michiel Sunderman (Tax) was elected to the partnership

Joep Bertrams (Tax) Erwin Bos (LampDR) and Han Teerink (Corporate) were appointed as counsel

Mark-Jan Arends joined as a lateral hire and was appointed as counsel (notary practice)

Senior counsel Marian Scheele was appointed as member of INREVs public affairs committee

How does BlackRock compare to Clifford Chance How does BlackRock compare to Clifford Chance

There are many similarities they reply Like enjoying a good work atmosphere and the right work ethic And the Amsterdam office of BlackRock is an influential office within the network just as CC Amsterdam Both companies operate at the top of the market BlackRock is a listed company but feels like a family business with Larry Fink as a founder who is very visible within the network

Hows your new job Hows your new job

Inge Both Astrid and I started in a newly created job As the Amsterdam office has become increasingly important our company wanted local experts for legal amp compliance and for corporate communications The core business here is asset management where we were used to legal advice as being the only revenue driver That being said legal expertise is very much part of the business case here In the end its all about client satisfaction and getting the job done as a team It is very useful that I worked with BlackRock for years at CC Having worked as a lawyer in both Finance and Capital Markets as well as Funds helps me a lot in my daily operations

Astrid I enjoy working in a professional services organisation again The main difference with my old job is that I work for a listed company now All external communication is in fact sensitive and could have an effect on share prices However because of our high profile its not a question of choosing not to comment but how to comment That makes my job very dynamic What do you miss the most

That seems to be a simple question as both ladies reply the canteen Apart from the great food in the canteen they have always appreciated the interaction with other departments and the feeling of togetherness By the way like CC they have a colleague who like Tom performs great dance moves What did you enjoy the most Astrid Organising Sail 2010 together with Roos being part of the armada how exciting Brainstorming with Roos (one of the sessions ended up in us secretly decorating the office exterior with a canvas supporting the Dutch football team in the WK of 2010 at 5 in the morning) Early breakfasts with Janet when she still worked in Amsterdam and getting an article into the Wall Street Journal against all odds

Inge I would say the Race of the Classics and the great combination between work and play in general And lets not forget the way CC events are organised with an excellent eye for detail

Any tips

Astrid Continue with the great alumni events of course And treasure the great culture and

atmosphere of the CC Amsterdam office

Inge On the business side I would stress that CC should stay the pragmatic people they have always been I really enjoy working together with former colleagues who are truly solution driven and give practical answers to my questions

I have a catering background graduating from the Hotel School and

working in five star hotels at the national airport and Noordwijk aan Zee In 2007 I made a career switch and worked as facility support for the Managing Board of ABN AMRO Unfortunately that position ended in 2009 after the acquisition by Fortis At that time OSP Catering asked me for a project at the Zuidas
