Difficult to imagine ?

World Before internet

A global computer network providing a variety of information and communication facilities, consisting of interconnected networks using

standardized communication protocols.

What is INTERNET???

History of the InternetHow did the Internet originate?

Goal:To function if

Research Projects Agency (ARPA)Goal:

To allow scientists at different

locations to share information

History of the InternetHow has the Internet grown?

What are some services found on the Internet?

• Email

• E-Commerce

• Social Media

• Unlimited information

• Making presentations(Just like this one !)

• World Wide Web(WWW)

Some of the Services

World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Oversees research, sets standards and guidelines

Mission is to contribute to the growth of the Web

Nearly 400 organizations around the world are members of the W3C

Who controls the Internet? No one—cit is a public, cooperative, and

independent network Several organizations set standards

A worldwide collection of electronic documents

Each electronic document is called a Web page

Also called the Web

Can contain text, graphics, audio, video, and built-in connections

A Web site is a collection of related Web pages

What is the World Wide Web (WWW)?

The term WWW refers to the World Wide Web or simply the Web.

The World Wide Web consists of all the public Web sites connected to the Internet worldwide, including the client devices that access Web content.

The WWW is just one of many applications of the Internet and computer

What is the World Wide Web (WWW)?

• Founded by - Tim Berners-Lee at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics(CERN).

• He developed a software application for a hypertext server program which stores documents and makes it available on the internet

• Which he named as WORLD WIDE WEB.

• Developed To- try to improve the CERN’s research document handling and sharing mechanism.

History of WWW

• In 1993, Marc Andreessen wrote a program named ‘mosaic ‘ which could read the documents in hypertext format

• Which was later named as “WEB BROWSER”

• Because of web browser people could easily access internet.

• It was a free software.

• “NETSCAPE NAVIGATOR” was the first web browser ,which was based on mosiac.

History of WWW

A web portal is most often one specially

designed Web page which brings

information together from diverse

sources in a uniform way.

Usually, each information source gets

its dedicated area on the page for

displaying information.

Portals

A program that searches for and identifies

items in a database that correspond to

keywords or characters specified by the

user, used especially for finding particular

sites on the World Wide Web.

Search engine

• A web server is a program running on a server computer .it consist of the website containing a no. of web pages.

• Web pages are designed on a language called HTML.

• Each web page can contain text , graphics, sound, video and animation .

Web server

• The web server receives request for a web page from a browser program running on the client.

• Then it locates that the corresponding page and sends it to the client computer.

• In this TCP connection the client sends one request and the server ine response.

• This request –response model is governed by a protocol called HYPERTEXT TRASFER PROTOCOL(HTTP).

• The most popular web servers are Apache , IIS.

Working of web server

A web browser (commonly referred to as a browser) is a software application for retrieving, presenting and traversing information resources on the World Wide Web.

An information resource is identified by a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI/URL) and may be a web page, image, video or other piece of content.

Web browser

Working of a Web browser

Step 1.Click the Web browser program name

Step 2.Web browser looks up the home page setting

Step 3.The Web browser communicates with the access provider’s server to retrieve the IP address. The IP address is sent to your computer.

Step 4.The home page displays in the Web browser

A uniform resource identifier (URI) is a string of characters used to identify a name of a resource. Such identification enables interaction with representations of the resource over a network, typically the World Wide Web, using specific protocols.

URI/URL

A hyperlink is a reference to data that the reader can directly follow either by clicking or by hovering. A hyperlink points to a whole document or to a specific element within a document. Hypertext is text with hyperlinks.
