Ø Teens don’t always feel as though social media makes them anxious
Ø Bring in the idea of “FOMO” or “likes”? That all changes Ø Impacts both boys and girls, but girls especially focus on how
many “likes” they can get Ø Not getting enough “likes” can impact one’s sense of self,
causing an increase in depression, anxiety and other mental health related concerns

I spent three decades being the average girl-next door
• Grew up in a town with 2,000 residents
• Moved to Portland, Maine as an adult – population 60K
• My social networks, both online & in-person were not much more than a couple hundred

In 2011, at the age of thirty-one, I gave it all up
• Started traveling the world & living out of a backpack
• Run my own business, with a remote team managed across four countries
• My social networks, both online & in-person grew to thousands

I live the life that inspires everyone else’s FOMO, but I
found that the more I traveled and ran a business by myself,
the lonelier I got.
And the fiercer my FOMO became…

I had to learn to: • Stay in touch with friends and family, without being sad that I wasn’t able to be
with them
• Figure out how to feel sad, when so many people told me that I shouldn’t feel that way or that I needed to appreciate the wonderful life and opportunities I had
• Recognize that the world we see online is not always the whole story…people don’t want to see bummer updates, and we don’t always feel comfortable sharing them
• Reframe my mindset to CELEBRATE with my friends virtually, and block out the noise
