• William “Bill” Torres, current chief execu7ve of the Philippine Internet Service Organiza7on (PISO), ini7ated the first informal nego7a7ons with the US Na7onal Science Founda7on to bring the Internet to the Philippines.
z 1986 • The first Philippine-‐based, Public
access BBS [bulle7n board system], First-‐ Fil RBBS went o n l i n e w i t h a n a n n u a l subscrip7on fee of P1000. 1987
• The Philippine FidoNet Exchange, a l o c a l n e t w o r k f o r communica7on between several BBSes in Metro Manila, was formed.
1990 • A commiUee helmed by Arnie del
Rosario of the Ateneo Computer Technology Center was tasked with exploring the possibility of crea7ng an academic network comprised of universi7es and government ins7tu7ons by the Na7onal Computer Center under Dr. William Torres.
1993 • June 1993, With the support of the
Department of Sc ience and Technology (DOST) and the Industrial Research Founda7on, The Philnet project (now PHNET) was born.
• 3 representa7ves from Ateneo, DLSU and UP played a role in connec7ng the Philippines to the world wide web.

1994 • On March 29,1994 at exactly 1:15
am (PH 7me), the router (Cisco 7000 ) t h a t c onnec t ed t he Philippines to the Internet was switched on!

• PHILIPPINE INTERNET WAS BORN • “We’re In.” Dr. John Brule, a
Professor in Syracuse University, announced at his first Interna7onal E-‐mail conference at the University of San Carlos in Talamban, Cebu with the 64 Kbit/s connec7on.
1993 • An Addi7onal P12.5M grant for the
first year’s running cost was awarded by the DOST to buy e q u i p m e n t a n d l e a s e communica7on lines to kickstart the second phase!
1993 • July 1993, Phase one of the
Philnet project shiied into full gear aier receiving funding from the DOST.
• It proved to be successful, as s t u d e n t s f r o m p a r t n e r universi7es were able to sent emails through the internet by rou7ng them through Philnet’s gateway at ADMU which was connected to Victoria University of Technology in Australia.
2006 • SMART Telecommunica7on
introduced “Smart 3G”, the first in the Philippines.
2010 • 29.8 Million Internet Users in the
Philippines

Networking capital of the world with a percentage of 93.9 for Facebook alone.

2012 was officially recorded as Republic Act. No 10175 on September 12,2012.
• This created many online s7rs and havoc because of the poten7al affect on freedom of expression, speech and date security in the Philippines.
• It was issued a temporary r e s t r a i n i n g o r d e r w h i c h eventually led to its removal on Feb 18,2014.

• SMART offers FREE INTERNET to prepaid users.
2013 • The Introduc7on of PLDT’s FIBR
