Domain names - the challenge of finding the right one As domain name real-estate becomes more and more scarce, business owners may need to think twice about their business name or wind up with disjointed and not perfectly related domain names for their business. Or worse still have their customers browsing a competitor’s site not realising is wasn’t the business they were after, unaware of the crossed wire.

The fact is, if you want to do business in Australia, you really want the .com.au domain. But with many businesses sharing similar business names in different industries, matching a domain to your business gets harder and harder every day.

Another problem we often see is that an Australian company registers an identical business name and domain name to that of an American competitor.

finding the right domain name for your business

An example being johnselectrical.com.au has a US cousin by the name of johnselectrical.com.

All of the above challenges can be avoided with one of three strategies:

1. Plan AheadPlanning ahead may seem obvious, but it’s the most simple and effective of all the strategies. Resist the temptation of spending countless hours deciding a business name, then registering it to find that the name is already very well catered for online. Before settling on any domain name be sure to search the web extensively for similar or same names with different extensions. While it may be OK for a similar name in a totally different field, you really don’t want a duplicate in the same industry anywhere.

2. Incorporate geography into your name

Assuming your name is fixed, and there is stiff competition for the domain name that you want, think about incorporating a geographical element to the name. Most businesses are related to an area, region, state, or even country. So including your geographical coverage will help searches see this straight away and may encourage them to click on your website.

3. Create a unique word or phrase that is unusual

Have you noticed the trend of new start-up businesses to invent a word or phrase. There are countless examples, but some of the more well-known include; Youi, iselect, and Hulu. So if you have the opportunity to create a name that is truly unique, you can end up with something that is both memorable and distinctive.
