Cloud savings - are they real?

A cloud readiness assessment case study

Following a series of mergers and reorganisations, a client approached us with this situation:

● A sprawling server estate.

● Over 600 servers.

● Spread 50 sites with “challenging” or even unknown connectivity.

● Over 100 applications.

And this problem:

● An urgent need to reduce costs, whilst maintaining service

Our approach:

● We analysed a subset of sites, servers and applications and then extrapolated to the entire estate.

The situation

Visiting all the sites was not practical or economic; instead, we conducted a survey of a subset of sites and servers:

● Sites○ Bandwidth○ Latency○ No. of users

● Servers○ Age○ Server dependencies

● Applications○ Number of users○ Dependencies

Step 1 - Fact find

Step 2 - Analysis of sites

● We identified sites in emerging markets that had connectivity challenges that would make hosting impractical at this time.

● Most sites had reasonable connectivity and bandwidth - hosting was perfectly viable.

● Performance could be improved via virtualisation provided through a WAN accelerator.

● Sites with large numbers of local users would justify local IT resources.

● Many sites could be without local servers.

Step 3 - Analysis of servers

● We found that the server estate was of mixed age, from almost new to 7+ years old

● We found that some sites were already running with no local servers

● We were provided with a cost of hosting an internal server - including elements for purchase, licensing, power and support.

● Some servers were found to be physically connected to manufacturing equipment and therefore deemed out of scope

Step 4 - Analysis of applications

● There were multiple CRM and accounts systems, and even multiple instances of the same application

● Office Productivity s/w suites were diverse leading to a strategy case to migrate to a standard platform

● Licensing of enterprise assets was left to an established internal software licence group to figure out any means of cross border s/w reharvest opportunities

● In the main, most IT or administration level applications were deemed to be ripe for moving to cloud models

We found that savings from moving to cloud were real and achievable. In this circumstance, a Public cloud will help by:

● Simplifying the server estate, reducing local duplication.

● Simplifying the application estate, allowing applications to be shared, rather than duplicated.

● Simplifying support services.

● Producing savings of around £2m.
