•Women are more susceptible to periodontal diseases
during every step of life. Not only is it the first reason, many
studies suggests that there may be a link between
periodontal disease and woman’s lifestyle, specifically
hormonal changes during puberty, pregnancy and
menopause.
•Even hormonal fluctuation also affects the blood supply to
the gums.
•As Women to Women, we have to help end puzzling health
symptoms and transform lives into long term a picture of
good health.
PUBERTY
•Gums may become red, tender,
swollen & likely to bleed easily when
chewing or brushing teeth.
•Increases in hormones progesterone
and estrogen
•Difficulty in orthodontic treatment
•Use of antimicrobial mouth rinses,
dental floss, brushing properly
MENSTRUATION
•Gums may become swollen, red, gum sensitivity, tenderness, lesions,
canker sores and swollen salivary glands.
•Before cycle starts, pocket problem and bleeding gums may occur.
•Use of Special cleanings, gum treatment or topical anesthetics to
ease any discomfort
PREGNANCY
•During the 2nd to 8th months of pregnancy, gingivitis
may cause red, puffy or tender gums.
•Women with periodontal disease may be more likely
to deliver premature baby or with low-birth weight
•Other issues associated with pre-term birth include
respiratory problems, vision and hearing loss,
or feeding and digestive problems.
•During pregnancy, routine brushing and flossing,
and seeing a dentist for a comprehensive
periodontal evaluation.
•Increases the level of hormone
progesterone
•Gums may become red, bleed,
inflamed and swell due to any
irritant like food or plaque
• Antibiotics and proper care of
oral hygiene
ORAL CONTRACEPTIVES
MENOPAUSE
•It may cause burning sensation, pain, altered taste
sensations (salty, peppery or sour), a decrease in saliva
flow, dry mouth, high sensitivity to hot and cold foods
•Saliva substitutes used as to reduce mouth dryness and
vitamin C & B complexes.
It is important to understand the etiological factors and
the pathological changes of periodontal disease to
recognize and appreciate the associated risk factors and
it requires a management to controls from associated
risk factors.
