VOLUNTARY HEALTH AGENCIES“A voluntary health agencies may be
defined as an organization that is administered by an autonomous board which holds meetings, collect’s funds for its support chiefly from private sources and expends money, whether with or without paid workers, in conducting a programme directed primarily to furthering the public health by providing health services or health education or legislation for health.”

VOLUNTARY HEALTH AGENCIES IN INDIA
1.INDIAN RED CROSS SOCIETY
It was established in 1920. it has a network of over 400 branches all over the India. It has been executing programmes for the promotion of health, prevention of disease and mitigation of suffering among the people.
FUNCTIONS OF INDIAN RED CROSS SOCIETY
1. Relief work.2. Medical and milk supply.3. Armed forces.4. Maternal and child welfare services.5. Family planning.6. Blood bank and first aid.
2. HIND KUSTH NIVARAN SANGH
1. Hind kusth nivaran sangh was founded in 1950.
2. Its headquarter in Delhi.3. Its precursor was the Indian council of the
British Empire Leprosy Relief association (B.E.L.R.A.) which was renamed as Lepra in 1950.
FUNCTIONS
1.Rendering of financial assistance to various leprosy homes and clinics.
2.Health education through publications and posters.
3.Training of medical workers and physiotherapists.
4.Conducting research and field investigation.
3. INDIAN COUNCIL FOR CHILD WELFARE
1. Established in 1952.2. It is affiliated with the international union for child
welfare.FUNCTIONS1. It provides the opportunities and facilities to
secure the health child.2. It develop physically, mentally, morally,
spiritually and socially in a health and normal manner and in conditions of freedom and dignity.
4. TUBERCULOSIS ASSOCIATION OF INDIA
1. The tuberculosis association of India was formed in 1939.
2. It has branches all over the India.3. Gives the funds.4. Training of doctors, health visitors and
social workers in antituberculosis work.5. Promotion of health education and
promotion of consultations and conferences.
5. BHARAT SEVAK SAMAJ
1. It is non-political and non- official organization was formed in 1952.
2. Its main objective of this is to help people to achieve health by their own actions and efforts.
3. Improvement of sanitation in village is one of the important activity.
6. CENTRAL SOCIAL WELFARE BOARD
1. It is autonomous organization under the general administrative control of the ministry of government of education.
2. It was established in August 1953.
FUNCTIONS
1. Surveying the needs and requirements of voluntary welfare organizations in the country.
2. Promoting and setting up of social welfare organization on voluntary basis.
3. Rendering of financial aid to deserving existing organizations and institute.
7. THE KASTURBA MEMORIAL FUND
1. It is created in commemoration of kasturba Gandhi, after her death in 1944.
2. Main objective of improve in lat of women, especially in villages through Gram- Sevikas.
8. FAMILY PLANNING ASSOCIATION OF INDIA
1. Formed in 1949.2. Headquarter at Mumbai. Branches all over the country.
FUNCTION1.Trained several hundred doctors, health
visitors and social workers.
9. ALL INDIA WOMEN’S CONFERENCE
It is only for women's , establish in 1926, it has now all over the country. Most of the branches are running M.C.H. clinics, medical centers, milk centers and family planning clinics.
10. THE ALL INDIA BLIND RELIEF SOCIETY
1. It is established in 1946.2. It organize the eye relief camp.3. It makes coordinate different institutes working
for the blinds.
11. PROFESSIONAL BODIES
Professional bodies conduct annual conferences, publish journal's, arrange scientific session and exhibitions, faster research, set up standards of professional education. E.g. (T.N.A.I.)
INTERNATIONAL HEALTH AGENCIES
1. WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION
Headquarter is in Geneva, Switzerland. Came in to force on 7 April 1948. which is celebrated every year as “ World Health Day”.
OBJECTIVES1. The objective of W.H.O. is “the attainment by all
peoples of the highest level of health.2. The main social target of WHO was “ attainment by
all citizens of the world by the year 2000 of a level of health that will permit them to lead a socially and economically productive life.
FUNCTIONS OF WHO
1. The WHO is the world’s directing and coordinating authority on all international health work. Through the WHO, the nations help each other in raising health standards.
2. The WHO most important function is to help countries strengthen and improve their own health services.

2. UNICEF1. It was established in 1946 formerly known as
UNICEF ( United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund).
2. It is now called “U.N. Fund”.3. The headquarter is in New York.4. Its regional office in New Delhi.5. The main concern of UNICEF is to improve the
health of mothers and children.
UNICEF IN INDIA
It gives the benefiting children in the following spheres:-
1. Education.2. Health.3. Nutrition.4. Water supply.5. Social welfare.
3. F.A.O.The food and agriculture organization
is a specialized agency of the united nations. It was established in 1945. headquarter in Rome.
AIMS:-1. To help nations raise their living standards.2. To increase the efficiency of farming, forestry and
fisheries.3. To better the condition of rural people.
4. FORD FOUNDATION
1. The ford foundation has helped India in the following respect:-
2. Orientation Training Course.3. Research Cum Action Project.4. Pilot Project In Rural Health Services,
Gandghigarh (Tamil Nadu).5. Establishment Of NIHAE.6. Calcutta Water Supply And Drainage.7. Family Planning.
5.CARE1. CARE (Co-operative for American Relief
Everywhere).2. It is non profit organization.3. It was created in 1945.4. For the immediate purpose of sending food
from American donors to needy people in the other countries.
5. CARE began its operation in India in 1950.
CONT…………… Since 1961, CARE is helping India in Midday
meal scheme for primary children. It also help in the fields of medicine, literacy,
vocational training, Agriculture.
6. USAIDThe United States Agency for
International Development (USAID), was formerly known as TCM or the U.S. Technical Co-operation Mission since 1952, India has been receiving assistance under this programme.
Under USAID, India has received assistance in the following project.
1. Malaria control and eradication.

7. ROCKEFLLER FOUNDATIONThe Rockefller foundation began
its activity in 1913. its purpose is to promote the well being of mankind throughout the world. It has been associated with several medical and public health programme in India.
The all India institute of hygiene and public health at Calcutta and the virus research institute at Poona were established with the aid from Rockefller foundation.
