QUANTIFYING THE PROBLEM
The U.S. federal government has pegged the cost of readmissions for
Medicare patients (65 and older) alone at
$26 billion annually
$17 billion of it pays for unplanned readmissions
that may not happen if patients get the right care.
The overall readmission rate for those 65 and older in the U.S. is
about
15% annually and in New Zealand for the same
population it’s about
10% annually
