Session-III

• Capacity building on

– Examination of eyes and application of

antibiotic ointment

– Umblical cord care

Examination of Eyes

Swollen or oozing pus from the eyes of

the baby

Apply antibiotic ointment in the baby’s eyes or a capsule which is

available

Antibiotic applicationGently pull the baby’s lower eyelid

down.

Squeeze a thin line of ointment moving

from the inside corner to the outside of

the eye.

Do not touch the baby’s eye with the tip

of the tube. If the tube touches the

baby’s eyes, it shouldn’t be used again.

If the eyes are swollen with pus, then

put the ointment two times a day for5

days.

Umbilical cord is bleeding

Action - The Sahiya/ANM/Skilled birth

Attendant should tie the cord again

Even if the bleeding does not stop, she

should refer the baby to the nearest facility

Good cord care includes:

Cutting cord with sterile

equipment or a new razor

blade depending on the

setting

Ligation with a sterile plastic

clamp or clean thread

Keeping cord stump

exposed, clean and dryBinding, use of powders and traditional practices like application

of cow dung, broken glass or herbs are harmful and should be

discouraged!

Cord Care Cord should be kept clamped

for at least 24 hrs after the

birth

The clamp can be removed

when the cord is dried and

occluded

No application of any

medicine is required if there is

no bleeding or discharge

The umbilical cord should be

kept clean and dry at all times

Dry the baby

Keep the baby warm and do not bathe for

7 days after birth. Wrap the baby in the

cloth with head covered and keep closer to

the mother

For preterm and Low Birth Weight Baby –

Kangaroo Mother Care

Initiate exclusive breast feeding

Routine Newborn Care

Bathing the baby

Keep the baby warm

days after birth. Wrap

the baby in the cloth

with head covered

and keep closer to the

mother

maintain the health and texture of the

infant's skin

heat stress loss

Giving a sponge

Breastfeeding

Infant in good breastfeeding position : tummy-to-

tummy, with ear, shoulder, and hip aligned.

Initiate immediate and exclusive breast feeding for 6 months
