TOP 10 CAUSES OF DEATH IN THE PHILIPPINES
1. Heart Disease
2. Stroke
3. Cancer
4. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
5. Road Accidents and Injuries
6. Diabetes
7. Dengue Fever
8. Maternal Deaths
9. Kidney Failure
10.Perinatal Conditions
HEART DISEASE
most common cause of heart disease is the narrowing or blockage of the heart’s arteries which leads to a heart attack.
STROKE- (cerebrovascular Disease)
Cerebrovascular disease or stroke occurs when blood is not supplied to some parts of the brain due to blockage (ischemic stroke) or bursting (hemorrhagic stroke) of a blood vessel in the body.
CANCER
Fifty thousand cancer cases have been recorded in the Philippines and the number is estimated to increase by 5% every year. Meanwhile, 16% of these recorded deaths are due to breast cancer.
CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE
include chronic bronchitis, chronic asthma, and emphysema. These diseases prevent air to freely flow to and from the lungs. It is estimated that 7% of all deaths worldwide are caused by chronic respiratory diseases. Meanwhile, 15% of cigarette smokers develop COPD. Second-hand smoke and pollution aggravates the problem.
ROAD ACCIDENTS AND INJURIES
DIABETES
An estimated four million Filipinos suffer from diabetes . Experts predict the number to increase to 380 million by 2025. With diabetes comes a number of life-threatening health complications such as heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure
DENGUE FEVER
From January to August 2010, 62,503 dengue fever cases have been recorded by the Department of Health. The number is said to be the highest ever recorded in the history of the country. Of this number, 465 deaths have been identified. This is almost as large as the number of dengue fever deaths in 2009. By the end of 2010, the DOH estimates the record to be as high as 800 deaths.
MATERNAL DEATHS
The Philippines, along with 55 other countries, contributes to 94% of all maternal deaths recorded worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. An estimated 162 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births have been identified. Common causes of maternal deaths include hemorrhage, hypertension, sepsis, labor and delivery problems, and complications related to abortion.
KIDNEY FAILURE
happens when the kidneys cannot function properly. One of the major functions of the kidneys is to clean waste material from the blood. Stage 5 kidney failure patients require renal replacement therapy or dialysis. Of the patients who undergo dialysis, only 50% may be healthy enough to undergo kidney transplant and of this number, only 20% can afford the costly life-saving operation.
PERINATAL CONDITIONS
Together with 42 other countries, the Philippines contribute to 90% of global under-five deaths at a ratio of 34 per 1,000 live births. Of this number, 47% is identified as deaths of infants less than 28 days old. Leading causes of perinatal deaths include diarrhea, pneumonia, sepsis, pneumonia, and asphyxia.
10 REASONS OF SICKNESS
Water pollution – Factories dumping toxic chemicals in the sea would have a domino effect. Fishes that we eat would be poisoned and when consumed by humans, it won’t be a good source of nutrition.
Noise pollution – You think that noise pollution don’t cause sickness? Noise pollution can cause hypertension, high stress levels, annoyance and aggression
Soil pollution – Plants and vegetables is a healthy food source. Of course, when polluted with chemicals, one would know the many effects in can cause.
Population – The more the
merrier? No. The more people there is in one country, the more sickness it can spread and at a faster rate.
Lifestyle – Eating out? Fast
food is very bad. Very unhealthy. It will make you sick!
Limited resources – In the Philippines, where we were recently hit by the rice shortage crisis, people resort to eating alternatives or not eating at all. Also, resources of organic food is limited that only those people who are willing to pay a premium price can avail of the fresh organic food from selected places.
Evolving sickness – Bird Flu transmitted to humans? Well, this is one effect of pollution but we can blame this on us, human beings, because we are the ones destroying the environment.
Attitude – having a bad attitude would not
only make seem your life longer but, it would actually make it shorter. Suicide rate in Japan and Hong Kong are among the highest when stock market crashes. In the Philippines, it’s not yet as high as those countries but, with this economic turmoil and instabilities, it would surely grow.
Crime – sad but true. The crime
rate here in the Philippines is high that I do not hear in the news a day passing without someone being killed.
Global warming – and this, my dear friend is not a made up story. All the things we do contribute to this ticking time bomb. Smoke belching factories and cars, non-biodegradable materials, non-recyclable things and other things we do, unknowingly contribute to global warming which would soon be the number one source of disaster not only in the Philippines but to the world from sickness, to drought, earthquakes and high floods.
