HANDLING MEDICATION
1. MEDICATION:Medication is used to cure/prevent disease.
Medication is accessible and disposed ofcorrectly
Care staff know about medication, and keep records
Licensed way of medication:(Instruction)• Health condition• Dose of medicine• Forms of medicines• Child or adult• Duration of medicine• Warnings i.e side effects and interactions with other
medication• Storage of medicine• Expire date of medicine
Dosset box:Dosset box is prepared by next of kin / family or friends.
Blister pack:Blisters pack is prepared and sealed by pharmacy .
PRN( Pro Re Nata):
When and as required medicine
MAR Sheet:Document to record about medication.
Handling and administration of medicines and drugs on behalf of service users:
There are three levels of handling medication.1. Administer of medication2. Assist with medication3. Prompt medication
The person lacks the ability or capacity to manage their own medication safely.
You are the manager of the medication
Administration of medications requires understanding how the medication is entering your body
Proper storage, handling, and disposal of medications
Remember “five rights” while administering medication:1. Right person
2. Right medicine
3. Right dose
4. Right route
5. Right time
you are allowed to administer medication with these forms:
Tablets( blister packs)LiquidsCreamsPRNantibiotics
We are not allowed to give:
Intravenous medication
Subcutaneous medication
Diabetes testing
Over the counter medicines
Home remedies
Medicine from Dorset box
Original packing unless stated in care plan / MAR sheet
Procedures for administration of medication:Always read the care plan1. Hand washing
2. wear gloves
3. use plastic cup/spoon
4. glass of water
5. check the label for service user’s name
6. check the expiry date
7. read the instructions
8. follow the licensed way of medication
9. administer the medication
10. record in MAR Sheet
11. replace the equipment's and tidy up
12. remove gloves and wash your hands
2. Assist with medication:Assistance is at the request of the service user ie. the person is in full control of their medication but just can’t manipulate the packets or bottles
Care workers assist by Opening bottles and packets, Shaking bottles, Removing lids, Popping pills out of packets
3. Prompt medication : Reminding the person to take their medication
Asking whether they have remembered to take their medication
you not suppose to do:
1. must not touch pills or tablets
2. never crush tablets or pills
3. never open any capsule
4. must not fill dosette box with medication
5. not allowed to hide the medication in the food to administer
6. do not force service user to have medication
7. do not give medication with tea or juice
8. do not misuse any medication
If service user has new medication or temporary medication such as anti- biotics, please inform office and update MAR sheet
If any concern about medication , please call office.
