Why Hand washing is very important in India ?

• Hands are the super high way for Infections.

• Indians use hands for eating food and toilet habits unlike the people in the western countries.

• Indian population is 120 crores. 30% of the people are still illiterate

• Hand is the only part which touches every part of the body.

• Mouth does not touch the nose , nose does not touch the ears and eyes do not touch the chin, but hand touches them all.

Diarrhoea and respiratory infections are the two biggest causes of child death globally. Handwashing with soap could substantially reduce diarrhoea and respiratory infections

Health Impact

UNICEF estimates that diarrhoea kills one child every 30 seconds. One million children die every year which is preventable.

Scientific research shows that handwashing with soap prevents disease in a more straightforward and cost-effective way than any single vaccine.

Hand washing with soap It is the “vaccine” that prevents infections

 Human faeces are the main source of diarrheal pathogens. They are the source of shigellosis, typhoid, cholera, all other common endemic gastro-enteric infections and some respiratory infections such as influenza and pneumonia.

A single gram of human faeces can contain 10 million viruses and one million bacteria.

Campaign on Hand washing This campaign widely supported by United nations and they encourage member countries to conduct such campaigns every year on 15th October involving NGOs, government , corporate , social service and health care organisations. PPPHW have published several documents like logo, technical literature, survey formats, and promotional materials for the benefit of the organisers of the campaign around the world.

Global Hand washing Day (GHD)

It is a campaign to motivate and mobilize millions around the world to wash their hands with soap. It takes place on October 15 of each year. The campaign is dedicated to raising awareness of hand washing with soap as a key approach to disease prevention.

When should you wash your hands?

1. Before, during, and after preparing food2. Before eating food3. Before and after caring for someone who

is sick4. Before and after treating a cut or wound5. After using the toilet6. After changing diapers or cleaning up a

child who has used the toilet7. After blowing your nose, coughing, or

sneezing8. After touching an animal or animal waste9. After handling pet food or pet treats10. After touching garbage

What is the right way to wash your hands?

1. Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold) and apply soap.

2. Rub your hands together to make a lather and scrub them well; be sure to scrub the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.

3. Continue rubbing your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the "Happy Birthday" song from beginning to end twice.

4. Rinse your hands well under running water.

5. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them

How do you use hand sanitizers?

1. Apply the product to the palm of one hand.

2. Rub your hands together.3. Rub the product over all surfaces of

your hands and fingers until your hands are dry.

It is a coalition of international stakeholders established in 2001

It aims to give support for the universal promotion and practice of proper hand washing with soap at critical times for families, schools, and communities in developing countries
