What is transplant?

Replacement of poorly functioning or non functioning organ with the properly working one through surgery is known as transplant.

Liver transplant

When a non functioning, alcoholic, chronic, cholestatic and cancerous liver is replaced through a surgery with a healthy one given by the donor, the process is known as liver transplant.

Usually imaging tests, heart tests, liver biopsy, general health exam, nutrition counseling, coronary artery disease test and psychological tests are done in pre evaluation tests.

Types of Liver transplant & surgery Orthotopic transplant – When entire liver of recently

deceased donor is used after a thorough check up, it is known as orthotopic transplant.

Auxiliary transplant – When only a part of non functioning liver is transplanted by the properly functioning part of donor, the process is known as Auxiliary transplant.

Living transplant – When the non functioning liver is replaced by the fresh one of a close relative of the patient, the process is known as Living transplant.

Split liver transplant – When two recipients are available, the bigger right lobe is used in adult whereas smaller left lobe is used in child, the process is known as split liver transplant.

Cost of Liver transplant

Cost of liver transplant varies from 10 lakh to 15 lakh depending on the donor cadaver to live respectively.

In all the procedure discussed before a total cost apart from transplant may range from 20,000 pm in the first 4 months,10,000 to 15,000 pm in next 6 months and 8,000 to 12,000 pm for further life time.

When prolong exposure of coronary heart disease, viral infection and damaged heart valves, stops functioning of heart, its transplant becomes necessary.

Heart transplantation procedure A brain dead person is only eligible as a donor. The process takes around 4 hours under general

anesthesia. Non-functioning heart is cut and removed from

the recipient and fresh heart is similarly detached from donor’s body. The fresh heart is then sewed in recipient body and flow of blood and heart beat is then analyzed.

Electric shock is sometimes given to initiate proper blood flow in the donated heart.
