Introduction• Science has bestowed health care

delivery system with excellent technological innovations. One such innovation is the computerization of the entire health care delivery system.

• Computerization of healthcare delivery includes clinical information system (CIS) electronic health record (EHR), electronic prescriptions, personal digital assistants, computer automated cancer detection and computerized theatre management applications.05/03/2023 05:04:08 AM

Clinical Information Systems (CIS)

• CIS is a collection of software and associated hardware that supports the entry, retrieval, update, and analysis of patient care information and associated clinical information related to patient care.

Electronic Health Records

• This is a replacement for the paper medical record as the primary source of information for health care, meeting all clinical, legal, and administrative requirements.

Personal Digital Assistants

• Personal Digital Assistants are literally handheld computers that help patient management. 05/03/2023 05:04:10 AM

Computer Automated Cancer Detection

• A ThinPrep Processor Model 2000 is used for the automatic preparation of PAP slides making it easier for screening atypical cells in female patients suspected with Cancer of the cervix. 05/03/2023 05:04:10 AM

Computer Automated Cancer Detection cont’d

• PAPNET provides guidelines for identifying abnormal cells from a series of digital images of PAP smears fed priori. 05/03/2023 05:04:10 AM

Computer Automated Cancer Detection cont’d

• AutoPap 300 QC is a re-screening system that uses image inter-production and pattern recognition techniques for identifying abnormal cells.

Computerized Theatre Management Applications

• The applications automatically record patient information and allow the theatre nurses to create lists which give full information on the necessary equipment and surgical instruments required in the operating theatre for a surgery specific to a surgeon or specialty.

Information Literacy, Information Technology and

Computer Literacy• Information literacy is the ability

to recognise when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate and use effectively the needed information.

• Information technology is the hardware and software that facilitate the storage, retrieval, communication and management of information. 05/03/2023 05:04:11 AM

Page 16: Computer and nursing practice

• Computer literacy entails having knowledge and understanding of computers combined with the ability to use them effectively.

• Voice Systems, Robot Technology, Biometric Technology and Web 2.0 are currently in use in most developed countries. Nurses have to be competent with these forms of technology because they make health care services easier to render and also save time and energy.05/03/2023 05:04:11 AM

Effects of Computing in Nursing Practice

Computing improves nursing practice in the following ways:

1. Keeping record of patient’s history.

2. Providing health information and data at any time.

3. Managing all results (laboratory, radiological, etc.) effectively.

4. Order entry and order management thus minimizing the risk of medication error.

5. Enhancing clinical performance by providing reminders about preventive practices such as immunization.

6. Electronic communication and connectivity between health team members and other care partners.

7. Effective patient care

8. Enhancing the administrative process.

9. Increasing confidence, improving productivity and efficiency of the nurse.

10.Helps nurses utilize research to provide evidence-based care.05/03/2023 05:04:11 AM

Summary• Computerization has contributed

enormously towards the reduction of medical errors and the problems associated with such errors by providing timely access to client information and by assisting nurses with client monitoring, decision making and bedside documentation. But, the real challenge lies in utilization of features, functions, input and output modalities that nurse would find most useful.
