What is Illness

• It is a specific condition that prevents your body or mind from working normally

• a sickness or disease

• a condition of being unhealthy in your body or mind

SIGNS:- are what the doctors and others can see.

- are objective evidences of disease ( ex. Nose bleed, swelling and soreness.)

The Difference between Signs and Symptoms

Symptoms:• Are what an individual

experienced.• They are the discomforts or

sensations only the patient can know.

• Are the subjective evidences of disease.

• ( ex. Fatigue, dizziness, and pain)

FEVER:• Fever is not a disease in it self.• Fever is present when the

body temperature is higher than the normal of 37°C .

• Fever is a part of body’s response to infection.

• It is a warning sign of illness.

Symptoms of Fever:

• Body temperature above 37°C• Flushed face, hot skin• Head and body aches• shivering and chills• Profuse sweating, fast

breathing, • poor appetite• Un explained crying or

irritability in children

Colds:• The common cold is a viral

infection of the upper air passages.

• The cold virus lives in the mucous membrane linings of the nose and throat.

Symptoms of Colds:• Sore throat, hoarseness• Runny nose, congested nose• Slight fever of short duration• Sneezing• Watery eyes• Headache• Cough• Body aches • chills

Pneumonia:

• is a common lung infection caused by bacteria, a virus or fungi.

• You may cough, run a fever, and have a hard time breathing.

• Having a long-term, or chronic, disease like asthma, heart disease, cancer, or diabetes also makes you more likely to get pneumonia.

Symptoms of Pneumonia:The symptoms of viral pneumonia usually are:

• Low fever• Chills• Muscle aches• Fatigue• Enlarged lymph

nodes in the neck• Chest pain• Sore throat• Coughing that usually

brings up only a small amount of mucus

The symptoms of Bacterial pneumonia

usually are:• High fever• Cough with thick

greenish or rust-colored mucus

• Shortness of breath

• Rapid breathing• Sharp chest pain

that is worse with deep breaths

• Abdominal pain• Severe fatigue

Asthma• is a chronic (long-term) lung

disease that inflames and narrows the airways.

• a respiratory condition marked by spasms in the bronchi of the lungs, causing difficulty in breathing. It usually results from an allergic reaction or other forms of hypersensitivity.

• Coughing, especially at night, with exercise, or when laughing.

• Trouble breathing.• A tight feeling in the chest.• Wheezing – a squeaky or

whistling sound.

Chicken Pox

• Chickenpox is an infectious

disease caused by the varicella-

zoster virus, which results in a

blister-like rash, itching,

tiredness, and fever.

Chicken Pox symptoms• Fever accompanied by itchy pink

or red spots on chest, back, and stomach and sometimes spreading to scalp and face. These change to blisters and then crust.

Appendicitis

• is an inflammation of the appendix, a 3 1/2-inch-long tube of tissue that extends from the large intestine.

• a serious medical condition in which the appendix becomes inflamed and painful.

• Pain in the center of stomach which after sometime moves to the lower right side

• Fever• Vomiting• Constipation• Refusal to eat

Symptoms of Measles

• The first symptoms of measles

are like a bad cold—a high fever,

a runny nose, sneezing, a sore

throat, and a hacking cough

• Fatigue

• Discomfort, irritation

Hypertension

• abnormally high arterial blood

pressure that is usually indicated

by an adult systolic blood

pressure of 140/90 mm Hg

(millimeters of mercury).

• High blood pressure (HBP) itself

usually has no signs or

symptoms. Rarely, headaches

may occur. Only complications

arise. ( stroke, heart attack,

heart failure and kidney failure

Influenza (Flu)• Is an upper respiratory infection

caused by a virus.• The flu lasts from one to ten

days and is spread by air borne droplets or by direct contact.

• Healthy individuals usually recover from it even without treatment.

Symptoms of Influenza• Chills and fever• Joint and muscle aches• Red, watery eyes• Cough• Congested or runny nose• Headache, tiredness,

weakness

Sore Throat • also called pharyngitis,

is a painful inflammation of the mucous membranes lining the pharynx.

• Almost everyone gets a sore throat at one time or another, although children in child care or grade school have them more often than adolescents and adult

Symptoms of Sore throat

• Throat pain , dry throat, • swollen glands in the neck• white patches on the tonsils,• hoarseness• Redness at the back of the

throat with or without enlarged tonsils
