It was recently highlighted that there is a deliberate need for a number of therapies to be offered to depression sufferers. Therapies is considered the most recommended in effectively treating the illness while medication is now thought to be an option when therapy is not available. Cognitive behavioral therapy is one for of psychotherapy otherwise known as “talk therapies”. CBT have been determined effective at relieving melancholic manifestations shown in some of the research studies performed in different parts of the world. Specially trained psychologist work altogether with the participants in making positive steps to change what they think or feel. Once a person commits himself to cognitive behavioral therapy, it is one step of accepting that his actions are greatly affected by his reasoning and emotions. Therapist will help the participants learn various strategies to eliminate negative thinking and skills to cope with the challenges of suffering a depressive illness. It is also very important to keep in mind that CBT is not an alternative for medication. It is meant to complement the medicine prescribed by a psychiatrist or a family doctor. In cases of those whom medications failed to help, CBT is the best substitute while cure is being developed. But most cases has proved that medication together with talk therapy works. There is an ongoing debate if psychologist has the right to prescribe medications. If this happens the therapist will only prescribe drugs when needed, after the patient has been thoroughly evaluated. In the meantime, family physicians are the ones who can advise when it comes to psychiatric medications if they think it will help.
