Cancers of the mouth and throat are serious conditions that need to be identified and treated as early as possible. With early detection, a patient has the best chance of recovery. Therefore, regular dental check-ups are very important. During a dental check-up, a patient is checked for common signs of mouth and throat cancer.

Possible symptoms of mouth cancer include white or red patches, a lump in the mouth, and changes in how a person chews or moves their tongue. Possible throat cancer signs include growths in the throat, as well changes in how a person swallows or speaks. The signs of these cancers vary among individuals and can include a variety of other symptoms.

Each year, around 40,000 individuals are diagnosed with throat or mouth cancers. They are most common in people who use tobacco products or drink heavily. By quitting smoking or reducing alcohol consumption, people can reduce their risk of getting these types of cancers.
