8 Ways to Reduce your Orthodontic
Treatment
If you’re thinking about having orthodontic
treatment but are daunted by how
long it takes, take heart.
You might be able to shorten your treatment time. Read on to find eight of ways you can
do that.
1. Just have your front teeth done
Your front teeth are often called the ‘Social Six’: They’re the teeth that other people see. It is possible just
to have your front teeth fixed. It’s not cheating:It’s a realistic way to shorten your treatment time. And
ultimately, nobody but you will know that only your visible teeth are perfect.
2. Improve, but don’t perfect
Along the same lines of compromise, you can improve your teeth, instead of aiming for perfection. Achieving
perfectly straight teeth can take a long time, depending on how your body reacts to the treatment.
Remember, you are moving teeth through the bone. If your goal is to improve your teeth, rather than to
achieve Hollywood-style perfection, it is a very effective way of shortening your treatment time.
3. Have adjustments more often
By having your orthodontic adjustments more often, you will see more results in a shorter period of time. This is because you are following up movement with an adjustment to keep
your teeth moving.
Speak with your orthodontist, who will be able to advise you of the optimum adjustment points for maximizing the effect of
your treatment.
4. Apply forceYou can have strong – even excessive – forces applied to your
teeth, which may move them faster. But it can be a risky treatment. If the force is applied inexpertly, it can kill the nerve of your tooth and cause it to turn black. That’s not at all what
you want!
This means that if a shorter orthodontic treatment time is important to you, you need to find an experienced practitioner
who knows how to avoid these kinds of problems.
5. Use TAD screws to focus the force on your
teethTemporary Anchorage Devices – known as TADs –
are miniature screws that help to control the forces applied to your teeth. They allow your
orthodontist to make fine adjustments and apply greater control to your treatment. With focused
force, and better control, you may be able to achieve great results in a shorter time.
6. Have micro-invasive orthodontic treatment
Some new technologies like the Propel Excellerator can shorten your treatment time. It involves your orthodontist making micro-perforations in the bone around your teeth. When this happens,
your body is encouraged to stimulate bone growth and remodeling. The result can be that teeth move more easily into
their new positions, in a reduced period of time.
7. Use an acceleration device
Acceleration devices work by using vibrating forces. The vibrating devices have a mouthpiece that you bite down on. This stimulates
blood flow to the teeth and jaws causing faster growth and remodeling of the bone which means, up to 30-50% shorter
treatment times! This can be used at home, and many offer apps that help you and your orthodontist to track progress and
treatment more effectively.
When having Invisalign with vibration devices like the Propel VPro5, we have seen great outcomes because
they encourage your aligners to fit better. Used consistently, you can change your aligners every 5 to
7 days instead of every 10 to 14 days – treatment time shortened!
Note: Your actual reduction will vary, depending on how your body reacts to treatment, and which kind
of acceleration device you use.
8. Getting specialist advice will reduce orthodontic treatment time most
