Transformative Technology will help us.1
NICHOL BRADFORD
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, Co-FOUNDERTRANSFORMATIVE TECHNOLOGY LAB

How do we prepare ourselves to be what the future needs us to be?
Because creating and Abundant future requires that we answer this question. And do two things.3
1) Unlock our gifts, and then to stabilize our ability to wield it reliably by the mastering our minds.4
2) Address the Human challenge of fear, and the offspring of fearInternally insecurity, anxiety self-sabotageExternally aggression, egotism, the inability to recruit and maintain team, fear of the unknownIt might not be cool to admit to fear, but as an entrepreneur, who knows many managing fear can be a daily thing. And also, from my time in massive organizations fear is also in play there especially around change and disruption.

Peter talks a great deal about FEAR
7
Source: Peter Diamandis
This is the amygdala, the seat of fear keep this is mind, we will come back to itFear is a big word, and it might sound un-relatable Another word for fear would be stress8
As did Gandhi 10
The real epidemic in our culture is not just heart disease, cancer, or obesity; it's loneliness and depression. One in 10 Americans is taking an antidepressant.
Dr. Dean Ornish
Long term stress and fear can lead to bigger issues Were the most medicated group of Americans in history.11
And the WHO says that Depression will be the leading disease burden by 203012
CHINANetwork Operations / Web Services / Customer Service / QA / Localization / IT / Go-To-Market
But this is where I came from.I spent most of my career in video games, on the highest levelThis included operating all the Blizzard properties in China. These were my departmentsMassive business, massive countryOrchestrated multiple nationwide launches no small feat 70 employees, and through policies directed the work of 1000 people every dayAnd a product that never ever rests.I was successful by all accounts, I was optimistic and then13
Then I went on a meditation retreat and in ten days had a positive psychological shift that was beyond anything I imaginedI walked out:Happy unrelated to circumstanceFearless came to understand that this was due to a sharp decrease in what is called self-referential thinking or rumination, or by its technical term, the inner critic. Were not talking about fear of snakes and dark alleys but what is called psychological fear. So I left that retreat wanting to know understand what happened to me and because I had a comfort with technology and an appreciation of scale.I wanted to make happy and fearless accessible for all.15
So I moved back to the US and started my lab.16
We do 3 Things:

And with one of the researchers I met while trying to understand my own changes.I started an online meditation course that teaches all the major families of meditation in a completely secular way. Our results are published, and peer reviewed, and they are significant. We teach online but I wanted to learn how to reach the entire world. I knew from WoW how to reach millions, but I wanted to help Billions reach happy and fearless.19
Global Solutions Program 2015
Which brought me here, last summer I graduated from the GSP program. SU is where you come when you want to use technology to solve the challenges facing mankind.SU profoundly changed me, and shaped my own moonshoot past scaling meditation via technology to scaling the benefits to scaling wellbeing itself. Because my biggest take-away from GSP is that
20
MY SU GSP TAKE-AWAY:Abundance is NOT a technical challengeIts a Human challenge
Point 1:Abundance is not a technical challenge its a human challenge.Imagine if this conference ran for 10 weeks, 9am to 10PM, 6 days a week Thats GSP.And like your experience at this conference you hear one extraordinary person after the next describing work that is groundbreaking. But by the end of experiences like this from a technical standpoint, You move from IF to WHENIts no longer, IF we solve water, or food, or any of the GGCS, its WHENEvery day there is a breakthrough, this is the most exciting time to be alive
Point 2: Listening to the speakers at GSP, I noticed that some of the hardest challenges these people described faced were human human fear, stress and anxiety their own and that of others. Thinking differently isnt always easy and family, friends, companies, communities are not always receptive.Addressing fear, stress and anxiety, are CRITICAL because they hijack the mind making it difficult to collaborate, negotiate or to accept others key to solving the GGCs
21
So the proposition of Transformational Technology is thisA use case set towards turning exponential technology towards supporting our mental and emotional wellbeingLowering the noise and improving the signal, so that mankind can get focused on creating abundanceWe put a man on the moon we can do this.22
Mediation is NOT option for Transformative LeadersThe Panel from last Saturday I spoke to al of them, they all meditate 23
Technology with a significant impact on mental and emotional wellbeing.
Thank you so much for being here. I am very grateful for the opportunity to share this with you. My intention is that by the end of this talk you will understand a growing, but currently hidden sector and how this sector can accelerate solving the Grand Global Challenges Facing Mankind.Im here to announce the TT200 the annual list of the innovators who are using science and technology to impact human mental and emotional wellbeing. 24

WHY NOW?
Why is this happening now?30
CASE: Stress
So lets talk about stress.31
Stress and anxiety have reached epic levels.USAAdults are more likely to report experiencing extreme stress.
24% of adults report extreme stress -- the highest rate since 2010.
More than 34% adults reported increased stress in the past year, while only 16% reported a decrease. (1)2015 Stress in AmericaWorkplace Options Study, 100K employeesThe Regus Group Stress StudyCenter for Collegiate Mental Health, 2015 Stress in America, APA2014 Stress in America, APA
This is the 2015 Stress in America reportif you think stress is going down, your wrong, its not32
Global StressHuge 3-year rise in depression, stress, and anxiety (2)
6 in 10 workers in major global economies experiencing increased workplace stress. With China (86%) having the highest rise. (3)

33
Stress Across Age GroupsAnxiety = the No. 1 mental health diagnosis on college campuses, followed by depression and stress. (4)31% of kids said their stress level had increased in the past year, twice as many as those who said it went down.(6)Millennials (aged 18 to 35) and Gen Xers (36 to 49) are significantly more stressed than the "average" stress level. There are major advances in medicine. But also some well established areas of study have been unleashed by exponential technologyFor example, HRV was a minor matter until combined with scale and data at scale.38
TECH DRIVEN SERVICE TRENDS
PERSONALIZED MEDICINEPERSONALIZED NUTRITIONPERSONALIZED MEDITATIONGREATERHUMAN COMPUTER INTERACTION
Exponential Tech + Medical advances are driving personalized everything and were interacting with computers and devices in greater #sThe number of connected devices is projected to grow from 22.9B in 2016 to 50.1B by 2020, attaining a 21.62% CAGR in four years.39
NATURAL PROGRESSION OF TECHEFFICIENCY QUALITY
Natural progression we are so curious we ask questions. Now that we are saturated by tech and have absorbed the productivity and efficiency gains and are moving onto questions about quality40
NATURAL PROGRESSION OF TECHWhat else can technology do for us?
Now the question we are beginning to ask is what else can this do for us?TransTech is exploding in start-up clusters around the world and I believe its due to this question.
41
How can I use technology to understand myself better?
How can I use technology to understand you better?
How can tech connect us in a meaningful way?
What is truly possible for human wellbeing?NATURAL PROGRESSION OF TECH
And these questions.
The new answer are enabled by exponential technologyGranular monitoring via sensorsData analytics recognizing patterns between stimulus and mood over time allowing for adaptation Coaching enhanced by AI?
Any technology use-case dedicated to helping you to feel better, more alive, more connected, more like your aspirational self, who you want to be day-to-day is Transformative Technology 42

Why wouldnt this hold true for wellbeing?
43
Oh, and then this happened.
Talented entrepreneurs & progressive investors stimulate a sector.
So this is a joke but it isnt.In tech, a lot of people are staring to meditate its when the 1st exit, 2nd spouse, and 3rd Tesla doesnt make you happy you know you have a problemOne of the key drivers in the growth around Transformative Technology are the entrepreneurs who are diving in and the investors who are following them. The people like me, who have an experience, and are also analytical and technical and want to expand itI was on the corporate hierarchy of needsEveryone probably has one for their company, country or sector. 44

This is important bc it has happened before Many trace todays wearable devices back to the QS movement. That movement also had tech entrepreneurs and investors on the forums, and when a critical mass combined with market opportunity it happened, and were sitting at 80MN devices, looking towards 245MN devices by 201945

Artificial intelligence algorithms to help spot harmful patterns, showing how a users body and mind respond to stress and how it affects their work and personal life.
These are my favoritesThe world will be filled with smart devices and AI, and they will need to know how we feel. Think about how mad you get on the automated call system imagine when every item in your house talks to you.Your phone knows more about you than your mother right now its mostly advertisers who are using your digital exhaust to decode your psychology why not use that information for yourself54

Ill leave you with this.People often ask me the connection between mediation and technology.I would say, it outlines a potential psychological state. A bit of a North Star.60
Meditation is a Powerful Tool1st Changes your relationship to fear by changing your relationship to the inner voice
2nd Reduces the amount of fear itself by decreasing the volume and frequency of self-referential thinking and rumination
3rd May reduce the seat of seat of fear itself, by shrinking the amygdala
Meditation is a powerful toolIt has many benefit for health, but I want to talk about fearYou can learn a lot of tricks about how to manage fearBut the way to actually address it directly is through meditation
1- Changes your relationship to fear2- reduces the amount of fear itself by reducing the volume and frequency of the voice3 reduces the seat of fear itself by reducing the amigdayla Brain scans of monks have shown smaller amigdhalas
This is relevant to us bc- One of Fears children is scarcity thinking, and zero sum human interaction- For Transformtive Leaders dedicated to Abundance, changing our relationship to the voice is essential 61

No more nobler use of technology than to bring peace to the minds of mankind.
No more nobler use of technology than to bring peace to the minds of mankind.63
Here is the opportunityYou can help unlock human potential through technology1st Find your gift, and stabilize your ability to wield it through mastering your mind2nd Use exponential technology to bring that same ability to others3rd Focus on pushing the envelope on human wellbeing. Most of the activity is focused on mental supportThere is no nobler a task for technology than to be applied to the obstacle common to all the GGCs Human Fear64
So how do we get from fear, anxiety, stress, and depression to Abundance? To a place where we can work together to create this future?Where we can have the important conversations we need to about AI, genetic engineering, space and more?65
And actually it looks a lot more like thisaround the world, all faiths, atheists, people of all kinds 66
So DO IT for the skills youll develop -- the clarity, focus, and concentration DO it for stamina and health - 10x9 is not overnight, youll need the resilience 67
But also, do it for Joy and Love and Freedom you deserve to feel that wayDo it for you
May you find happiness, and the root of al happiness and may you positively impact the lives of a Billion people
