Terminology• Trisomy 21 (Nondisjunction) – Normally there

are 23 pairs of chromosomes; person with DS have an extra chromosome on the 21st set (hence the ‘tri’).• Most common (95% of births)

Terminology• Mosaic DS – Occurs when some, but not all cells

contain 47 chromosomes; possessing only some DS characteristics.• 1% of people with DS

Terminology• Translocation DS – part of the 21st pair of

chromosomes breaks off and attaches to another pair, usually 14th; they still possess the 46 total chromosomes, but because of the break off, these people take on characteristics of DS.• 4% of all people with DS
