OdorSCIENCE PO Box 207 Oradell, NJ 07649 www.odorscience.net Dental instrument disinfection with Avanflex TM Avanflex TM can be used by itself or as part of a complete system to clean and disinfect dental instruments in remote locations such as clinics in rural areas, refugee camps, and natural disaster-stricken locations Avanflex TM requires no energy, which is advantageous for many communities that logistically cannot guarantee a constant supply of electricity. Avanflex TM is lightweight (each pouch weighs less than 0.25 oz), small, and easy to carry on long journeys. Avanflex TM ’s characteristics make it the ideal choice for disinfection on humanitarian medical and dental trips. Avanflex TM Field Disinfection Kit Avantec has developed a field disinfection kit based on the input of dentists who have used Avanflex TM for instrument disinfection on volunteer dental trips in developing countries. The kit revolves around a three step process of cleaning the instruments in detergent, disinfecting them in chlorine dioxide, and finally, rinsing the instruments. The kit includes 3 1-gallon sized plastic containers for the 3 steps; a scrub brush, a perforated plastic tray, rubber gloves, a set of tongs, a timer, towels, chlorine dioxide test strips, detergent pouches and Avanflex TM chlorine dioxide generating pouches. Proven in the Field Avanflex TM and Avanflex TM field kits have been used by American dentists in Uganda, Peru, and Belize. These dentists have found the pouches and kits to be easy to use and especially appreciate the ease of storage and transportation of the Avanflex TM line of products. Dr. Richard Gurmankin said that the Avanflex TM field kit “worked beautifully” and was “such an improvement over the biocide” that he had used on previous trips. OScience continues to provide Avanflex TM to volunteer dental trips and seeks to expand its presence in this market. Avantec has also begun preliminary discussions to extend Avanflex TM ’s reach by supplying it to a hospital in Nicaragua, allowing medical and dental personnel to take advantage of Avanflex TM ’s transportability and ease of use in their outreach clinics. To gain further understanding of the field of instrument disinfection, OScience has undertaken plans to test its chlorine dioxide products for both potential corrosivity of stainless steel instruments and microbiological efficacy.
