Treating Tonsillitis With Tonsillectomy
Treating Tonsillitis With Tonsillectomy
“Tonsillectomy generally involves the use of a scalpel to remove the tonsils tissue”
Tonsils are tissues located behind the nasal passages. They generally function to prevent infections.
But often these tissues can get infected leading to the enlargement of these glands which will in turn
cause abscesses, sore throat, constant bad breath, ear infections or even sleep apnea. In such cases,
tonsillectomy is the procedure that is done to remove the tonsils to relieve the patient from the
above mentioned problems.
The procedure is generally done on children if they face frequent throat infections during the course
of a single year. The main cause of this almost always is an infected tonsils gland. Tonsillectomy is
mostly a procedure that is simple and devoid of any serious risks to the patient, but in certain rare
cases, some risks do come in to play. A patient needs to be aware of these when getting ready for a
Tonsillectomy. The experts at Nova Speciality Hospitals have been performing this surgery as part of
their day surgery programme and can clear any doubts one might have.
Risks Involved
In the case of failure to fix the problems after the first surgery, the patient will keep suffering
from issues like sore throat and sinus infections. In this situation, an additional surgery
maybe suggested by the doctor.
Impaired healing is another rare problem that may follow the surgical procedure. This can
cause another bout of infections and dehydration, making it necessary for the patient to be
hospitalized with necessary pain medication and admission of fluids into the body.
Sometimes there may be bleeding from the wound of the removed tonsils gland.
The use of electrocautery methods to stop the bleeding can lead to thermal injury to the
surrounding tissue of the tonsils as the temperature can go up to around 400 degrees
Celsius.
The accepted procedure for tonsillectomy generally involves a scalpel to remove the tonsils tissue
and afterwards lasers or electrocautery is used to stop the bleeding. A protein called thrombin that
causes blood to clot is also used in an effort to stop the bleeding.
Methods For Tonsillectomy
Harmonic Scalpel - The procedure involves the use of a harmonic scalpel that uses ultrasonic
energy making the blade vibrate and transfer energy to the tissue that is being removed.
Electrocautery - This method utilizes electrical energy to cut through the tonsillar tissue and
helps decrease blood loss through searing.
Radiofrequency Ablation - This method uses radio frequency energy through the use of
probes, which causes scarring on the tonsil tissue and leads to a decrease in size.
Thermal Welding - This is a relatively new procedure that makes use of pure and focused
thermal energy on the tonsils tissue.
