In late 2011 we started researching and developing the Boost Buddy concept. The prediction that the current generation of young adults known as Generation Y (born between 1980 and 1996) would not live as long as their parents intrigued us.

It comes down to lifestyle and nutrition and the impact of the obesity epidemic on the long term health of this new generation. It’s that simple, and that serious.

A proper healthy and varied diet combined with regular physical exercise are ideal for long term health and well being. A poor diet and nutrition are identified as risk factors for cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes mellitus, gastrointestinal disease, osteoporosis and some types of cancer. Most people know this, so why do 2/3rds of the population not take a vitamin supplement of any kind?

Mintel researched the vitamin and mineral supplement market in 2012 and found that only 24% of 16 to 24 year olds consumed a vitamin supplement in the last 12 months.

48% of 16 to 24 year olds say they prefer to get all their vitamin and minerals from their diet. 17% say they don’t take them because they don’t know enough about them and are confused. 18% say they don’t take them because they don’t work 22% say they are too expensive; 15% say they would like to take them but they forget.

In 2001 The Irish Universities Nutrition Alliance (IUNA) conducted the most extensive research survey to create a clear picture and illustrate the significant changes in our dietary habits on the island of Ireland. The survey included consumers of vitamin and mineral supplements and still found that the general population was consuming less than the recommended daily allowance for 9 essential vitamins and minerals.

The industry has had to clean up its act concerning health claims since the end of 2012 when compliance with the new EFSA’s permitted health claims register became law under EuRegulation 432/2012. Of the 44,000 health claims independently assessed by EFSA, only 241 were approved. European customers are now the best protected in the world.

LOW DOSAGE HARMONISATION IS ON ITS WAY

Now that EFSA has concluded its review of the health claims, there is a move within Europe to only allow formulation of vitamins and minerals up to the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) level. This is good news for consumers as it will clarify the required intake for optimising their health and well being. Most vitamins are water soluble which means the body does not store the excess, and will excrete it.

Boost Buddy’s philosophy is to remain true to the fact that OUR products are supplements to your diet and not replacements. We prepared our products in dosages that comply with the RDA levels.

From our research we believed there was a gap in the vitamin and mineral supplement market and so Boost Buddy was born. By increasing consumer awareness of the landmark work carried out by EFSA, we hope to encourage previously sceptical consumers to give vitamins and mineral supplements a try. We also wanted to reassure customers about the quality of our manufacturing and the traceability of our ingredients. We insisted on making the product here and chose Bioshell Teo in Belmullet Co. Mayo as our partners.

Our supplements are suitable for everyone over the age of 14. We are very keen to attract young customers as they start out on some of life’s formidable rites of passage, like exams, college, leaving home, relationships, finding a job, setting up home and maybe starting a family.
